1 Introduction The aquatic dissolved organic matter (DOM) contains tens of thousands of organic molecules that support food webs in aquatic systems. Since Krogh and Keys (1934) developed the method to determine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in seawater, we have made significant strides in understanding the global perspective of DOC in the oceans (Hansell et al., 2021).
