Abstract An animal’s ability to survive and thrive—whether fleeing from danger, eating a meal, or fighting an infection—arises from the collective moment-to-moment activity of many interacting cell types throughout the body. Physiology seeks to elucidate these cellular interactions that span organs, cell types and timescales, but has been limited by the inability to record this time-varying cellular activity simultaneously throughout the entire body.
Abstract The function of neuronal networks is determined not only by synaptic connectivity but also by neuromodulatory systems that broadcast information via distributed connections and volume transmission.
In this issue of Neuron, Gurnani and Silver, 2021 Gurnani H. Silver R.A. Multidimensional population activity in an electrically coupled inhibitory circuit in the cerebellar cortex. Neuron. 2021; 109 (): 1739-1753.e9 report that activity across Golgi cells, a major type of inhibitory interneuron in the cerebellar cortex, is multidimensional and modulated by behavior. These results suggest multiple functions for inhibition in cerebellar computations.
Highlights • dI6dmrt3a and V0d neurons are commissural inhibitory neurons in zebrafish • dI6dmrt3a and V0d neurons are cooperatively involved in left-right alternation • dI6dmrt3a and V0d neurons are recruited at different frequencies of swimming • Ablation of dI6dmrt3a neurons impairs regular left-right alternation Summary Commissural inhibitory neurons in the spinal cord of aquatic vertebrates coordinate left-right body alternation during swimming.
