1 Introduction Advances in our understanding of climate have been closely tied to advancements in numerical climate modeling. However, the complex interactions among motions at various horizontal scales in the tropical atmosphere present a significant challenge for global atmospheric model development. At low resolutions, where a clear separation is assumed to exist between planetary circulation and unresolved convective systems, models parameterize these systems as subgrid-scale processes.
