Creativity got our household through the 2020 lockdowns. If it wasn’t for outside-the-box thinking, my two boys would have happily spent that whole period exploring the depths of YouTube Kids for months on end without complaints. But we had to do something! Once the restrictions allowed for it, we went exploring. Keeping local and staying on foot meant we had to see what our village actually had to offer (beyond the one dull under 5s we were aware of).

This year my oldest son was finally able to celebrate his birthday, and those of his friends for the first time in his life following the pandemic. The first lockdown was implemented mere days before his first birthday in 2020, and we were still in lockdown for his second, so finally at three-years-old, we could have a party. As March and April 2022 approached, my weekends became booked up with toddler birthday parties.

None of us want to be stuck inside catching cabin fever when we could be heading out for a day out, so here are my top 8 ways to enjoy a day out with your family for free. Head out to a museum There are so many free museums to visit, and we have loved checking out places like the Science Museum and Natural History Museum. Not only are they free, but they are also educational – something that I see as a win-win for parents.
