I love visiting an artist’s studio for the first time and feeling a rush of recognition. Jessie Tam’s window at PINK in Stockport is covered in various sheets of semi-transparent white: a loose curtain with almost imperceptible embroidered lettering; a long sheet hand painted with swirling brushstrokes; the vertical slats of a pulled-back blind.

The Art Schools of Yorkshire represents the latest stage of artist Matthew Cornford and writer John Beck’s sprawling project documenting England’s historic art school buildings. Central to their endeavour is Cornford’s striking photographic survey of the facades of these buildings – or, where they have been demolished, the spaces in which these buildings once stood. I never went to art school, but art schools have long been central to my life.

Charlotte Verity’s exhibition The Season Following unfolds across six rooms at Harewood House Trust, an eighteenth-century estate located just north of Leeds. The Somerset-based artist moves through the four seasons, according to a visual process she explains as a way ‘to attain truth’. Spanning over fifteen years’ worth of work, comprising oil paintings and monotypes, it’s an exhibition that steers away from simple botanical record however.
