Style and Beauty Cues From the Stars
Penelope Cruz was the undisputed Queen of the Toronto International Film Festival this year, with two buzzy films, The Bunker and La Bola Negra, which won the coveted TIFF People’s Choice Award. And she certainly looked the part. From her artfully tousled hair – the new length just above her shoulder, has been dubbed a “weekend bob,” by her hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos – to her fingertips painted in a rich bordeaux colour, she was perfectly on trend for fall, as is the almond shape.
The Moment: September 21-25, 2026
SEPTEMBER 21, 2026 First TIFF, Then OSCAR Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi introduced their film La Bola Negra at its Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) premiere by saying, “Please enjoy our gay magic.” The audience immediately fell in love with “Los Javis,” Spain’s sweet, exuberant and brilliant filmmakers, who are also a former couple.

SEPTEMBER 14, 2026 Celine Dion’s Note-Perfect Fashion This weekend, the ultimate diva, Celine Dion, returned to the stage, performing in Paris for the first time in six years due to her neurological disorder, stiff person syndrome, which causes severe muscle stiffness and painful spasms that impair movement and, crucially, affect speech and singing.
August 31-September 4, 2026
AUGUST 31, 2026 Magical Max With the season moving into its crucial final month of play, the Toronto Blue Jays will need stellar pitching if they want to qualify for playoffs. Yesterday, help came from an unlikely source as 42-year-old Max Scherzer, who has had his struggles this season, turned back the clock and delivered a vintage performance, shutting down the Seattle Mariners and keeping the playoff hopes alive.
The Moment
It once seemed like wild horses couldn’t tear this band away from the stage – but the Rolling Stones just announced they’re releasing their 25th studio album, Foreign Tongues, this summer with no plans to hit the road. There was a European stadium tour in the works, and Mick Jagger is on the record saying he wanted it to go forward, the assumption being that Keith Richards nixed the idea back in December due to his arthritic hands and the rigours of yet another months-long engagement.
The Moment: July 20-24, 2026
JULY 24, 2026 Bridging the Divide The ribbon is finally being cut today on the Gordie Howe International Bridge, the 2.4-kilometre, six-lane span linking Windsor, Ont., and Detroit, Mich.

The Moment: June 22-26, 2026
JUNE 26, 2026 A Towering Achievement The CN Tower turns 50 this week, and while the 533-metre landmark no longer holds the title of the world’s tallest freestanding structure, the star of the Toronto skyline still looms large in Canadian hearts. Conceived by the Canadian National Railway Company, it was originally erected in 1976 as a telecommunications and broadcasting hub to remedy interference from the city’s skyscrapers, while also showcasing Canuck innovation.
The Moment: June 8-12, 2026
JUNE 12, 2026 A Life in Colour Hearing that the British artist David Hockney has died feels like some of the colour in the world has faded. The lids have been put back on the tubes of Naples Yellow, Ultramarine and Cadmium Red, the highly saturated acrylics he used to such great, vibrating effect. Hockney’s bright, modern palette was inspired by his life-changing move in 1964 from drab post-war London to Los Angeles.

During her time in the White House as First Lady, when her husband Barack Obama served as president from 2009 through 2017, Michelle Obama came to internalize what centuries of royals, who are also mostly seen and not heard, have long understood: clothing can be a powerful way to transmit signals without saying a word.…

As the glorious Canadian summer winds down and most of us return to a more structured life, there is a hint of melancholy in the air. Our laissez-faire, barefoot, nonchalant selves get packed away along with our linen shirts and open-toed shoes. We become focused and serious again. But rather than succumb to the inevitable…

'Bristol's collaborative approach is a beacon of hope in an increasingly divided world'
Something remarkable happened in Bristol last summer that should serve as a reminder of our identity as a city. It can also be an inspiration for the choices we face in the upcoming metro mayor elections. When the far right threatened to march on our city, aiming to attack hotels housing refugees, the people of Bristol responded with resounding, united action. On August 7, thousands poured onto the streets, filling them so completely that there was literally no space for the far right to march.
