Shift Coastal Technologies is the brainchild of biologist-turned-entrepreneur James Spencer, who saw a need for marine vehicles that could get into dangerous shorelines that would be risky for crewed boats. Prior to developing autonomous vehicles, Spencer worked as a consultant with the mining industry and First Nations.

Nanaimo RCMP launch criminal investigation after missing man found dead

The Nanaimo RCMP are treating the death of a missing man as criminal. The body of Mahadi Redwan, 23, who was reported as missing by police Monday, Nov. 10, was discovered Wednesday, Nov. 12, near the southbound lanes of old Island highway between Turner and Mostar roads. Redwan had not been seen nor heard from since Nov. 2 when he had arranged for a ride with a colleague to Courtenay, but was not at his home the following day when he was to be picked up.

Dealing with an industrial land shortage and the issues that exacerbate accessing what’s available was the focus of a panel discussion Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance’s State of the Island economic summit. “We’re at a bit of a crossroads on Vancouver Island and we have been for some time,” said panel moderator Pamela Shaw, Vancouver Island University’s master of community planning program director.
