Tunnels to some of Shetland’s islands could be “utterly transformational” and could be a “roadmap” for how to deliver infrastructure in rural Scotland. Shetland Islands Council (SIC) leadership has been undertaking a series of meetings in Edinburgh on inter-island transport connectivity ahead of a key decision-making milestone later this month.

Plans from the coastguard to stop paying volunteers for callouts could have “serious implications” for Shetland, the chairman of the local community safety and resilience board says. Councillor Allison Duncan also said the board should write a letter expressing its concerns about the move.
