Noting perhaps my largest personal career accomplishment, which is launching CodePen 2.0. Far more work, believe it or not, than the entire creation of the original CodePen. This isn’t the place to describe every detail of what we did and why we did it. If you’re interested, perhaps our Why 2.0? podcast or the What’s New? page. Instead, a couple of stories from the first week of launch. I was working on a demo with someone I’ve never met before. It started on their (classic) Pen.

When You Need To Make a Triangle, Think Conic Gradients

It took me a while to get it, but conic-gradient() in CSS is actually pretty useful. For a while I was like, how many times do you actually need a this color-picker ass look? Not very often. There is a clearer use case when you set hard stops for the colors. Pie charts are cool, but honestly, you’re probably better off with <svg> so you have individual elements for interactivity and accessibility information and such. Backgrounds in CSS are generally decoration-only.

When Sites Need to Walk Away

The Internet Archive has a new book: VANISHING CULTURE. (Digital copy is free.) According to a Pew Research Center report, 26% of pages from 2013-2023 are no longer accessible. But that’s not the whole story. In a new study published in Internet Archive’s book, VANISHING CULTURE, data scientists working with the Wayback Machine have found: 16% have been restored through the Wayback Machine. 56% are preserved before they disappear. A quarter of pages from the last slightly-more-than-a-decade gone.
