Pictured are Talia Boyd, Edith Hood and Anna Rondon of the Navajo Nation, who were kind enough to show me around. Edith worked in the mines as a young woman and was later diagnosed w/ lymphoma. Her home is sandwiched btw two abandoned mines and ~1 mile from the superfund site.
I spent my morning just north of Church Rock, N.M., where in 1979 the dam at a uranium mill’s disposal pond broke, sending >1,000 tons of radioactive waste & >90 million gallons of toxic tailings into the Puerco River. Today it‘s a 125-acre Superfund site. The cleanup is ongoing. https://t.co/JmWej4ewED
