Novelist Paul Yoon Is Tired of Humans
Photo courtesy of Paul Yoon. You wouldn’t guess from meeting Paul Yoon just how sick he is of people. I got to know him on the tennis courts last summer at the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, where he was the affable sort of opponent who always gives you the benefit of the doubt and loves to shoot the breeze between points. But if you’ve read his work, you know he’s no stranger to the violent side of the human heart.
Leading through design
The principle of circular economy sounds obvious – defined, for example, by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation as “a system where materials never become waste and nature is regenerated.” But the roadmap to move from our current “take-make-waste” model of linear economic activity is not well defined, and the first steps toward adoption of this model are neither uniform nor apparent for different members of the built environment value chain.
Appeal and appetite: Australia’s circular progress
Chris Knapp:My first question is about the general awareness of a circular economy, both inside and outside the building and property sector. Are there mature or early adopters of the circular economy that we could learn from? Ashleigh Morris:On industry awareness or recognition, what we see is that around 80 to 90 percent of people surveyed have high awareness of circularity and rate it as important or moderately important.
The Toxic Legacy of the French Banana — The Dial
In the spring of 2022, a set of advertisements appeared in the Paris Metro and in cities throughout France. The ads showed a cartoon of a stereotypically French man or woman, in a beret and striped shirt. Under the figure’s arm, where a baguette should have been: an enormous banana. In large red, white and blue letters: LA FRENCH BANANE. The bananas depicted were French in the sense that, as indicated in small letters at the bottom of the ads, they came from Guadeloupe and Martinique.
Andrew N. Liveris Building, The University of Queensland
The Andrew N. Liveris Building at the University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus is a bold work of architecture. But is it too bold? Some would say yes. Equally, some would dismiss this project – a joint effort between Lyons and M3 Architecture – as a colourful, seemingly hermetic and anti-contextual building dropped in from outer space (or Melbourne) and wrought with a sensibility that tracks architectural lineages at odds with a Queensland vernacular.

Designing hope: The role of architecture education in the climate crisis
In architecture schools across the world, conversations about how to respond to the climate crisis are happening right now. Fervent and well-intentioned conversations, perhaps tinged by idealism or militancy, perhaps by panic. Sometimes these are led by students, sometimes by staff and leadership, sometimes by all three working together. In places, the conversation is very advanced, while elsewhere it is halting, conflicted, or barely beginning.
Hold Your Applause
That Wednesday was my wife’s day to walk the dog, so I hadn’t been or even looked outside yet when, at 8 PM, the TV show we were watching was interrupted by the sound of boisterous, widespread applause. We went to see what was going on. We live in a cluster of public housing buildings, each shaped like a castoff from a failed serif font, and arranged in a way that creates alleys, alcoves, and half-enclosed courtyards in the negative space between each building.
A Cautionary Tale
My career as a bartender began with a cautionary tale. Even for a drizzly night in winter my first shift had been slow. I’d expected some vague excitement. Not including the pints of Stella that José, the foodrunner, kept coming back for, I’d served fewer than ten drinks all night. There were exactly two people seated at the bar. At the one end was this guy with a ponytail, who kept telling me the details of his marathon training and showing me all the neat things his iPhone did.
In the Name of Notre Dame
Henri Matisse, Notre Dame une fin d’après-midi, 1902 In September 2016, police found a Peugeot with missing plates parked just steps away from Notre Dame; inside the car, they found seven cylinders of gas. The following week, four women—one of whom was carrying a letter declaring allegiance to ISIS and describing the planned attack as a deliberate act of terror and vengeance—were arrested and charged in connection with a plot to destroy the cathedral.
