Photo courtesy of Sue Tompkins. One of the hardest tasks for any artist is to simply sound like themselves. In the case of Sue Tompkins, there’s almost no mistaking her voice for anyone else. The Scottish multi-media painter and performer is probably most widely known as the frontwoman of Life Without Buildings, the cult indie rock band whose legacy as one of the very best of the 2000s was cemented long before TikTok came back to super-charge their reputation again.
Can Villanelle Get a Proper Fucking Pint of Guinness, Please?
All photos courtesy of Villanelle. When the members of Villanelle turned on their Zoom camera on Monday, their elation was palpable. Not because they were thrilled to speak with me, but because England had just beaten Mexico 3-2 in the World Cup the night before. No hard feelings, though.
Instagram Poet Kitty Lever Is Learning to Trust Her Audience
Kitty Lever, photographed by Julian Ribeiro. Kitty Lever lives in a universe of her own creation. Via her Instagram alter ego, the content creator, model, and poet has curated a totally singular aesthetic language that seamlessly fuses together things as seemingly disparate as her love of the written word, Gollum, improv comedy, and a background playing D1 sports.
Interview and Able Made Ask: Who Is the Hottest World Cup Player?
As World Cup fever sweeps NYC, Interview and Able Made invited friends, contributors, enemies, and lovers to come out and rep their team in celebration of the launch of our collaborative Home and Away jerseys and socks. The Ground in Chinatown provided our immersive soccer experience for the night, featuring buff boys plastered in the magazine’s logo playing soccer upstairs and a lively dance party courtesy of DJ Brooke Fleeca downstairs.
April Bloomfield Would Like You to Stop Squeezing Your Meat
All photos courtesy of April Bloomfield. April Bloomfield’s been cooking meat that makes people a little emotional, first at London’s River Café, then at New York’s Spotted Pig and The Breslin, where she became one of New York’s most celebrated chefs.
Greta Thunberg’s Sister Beata MonaLisa Does The Splits
All photos courtesy of Beata MonaLisa. Some months ago, while doomscrolling, I came across a video of a girl tearing the fuck out of Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.” Watching her felt like chasing one of those slippery water snake toys that shoots out of your hands, or fancying a straight boy: elusive, yet addictive. The absurdity of her delivery was underwritten by perfect vocal technique. I couldn’t look away, binging more and more content.
Derek Blasberg and Mel Ottenberg on the Golden Age of Going Out
All photos courtesy of Derek Blasberg. Today, Derek Blasberg is a prolific writer, high-society fixture, and father of two. But once upon a time, he was a fresh NYU grad with a vodka ginger and cigarette eternally in hand, and a total inability to turn down an interesting invitation. Although decidedly an uptown girl, Blasberg found himself documenting the indie sleaze era as he spent every night out partying with some of the biggest celebrities, socialites, and supermodels in the world.
underscores Wants Pop Perfection
Photos courtesy of underscores and Natalie Marlin. underscores blends into the crowd at the Mall of America so well that I don’t even notice her at first. I scan for April Harper Grey amongst the swarms of families, tourists, and teenage friend groups, armed with only a text (“we’re at Johnny Rockets rn lol”), but reach the end of the food court still empty-handed. When I finally find Grey at a table in a casual off-the-shoulder top, her greeting is far more soft-spoken than her music suggests.
“I Immediately Shit My Pants”: Eddie Huang’s Book Tour Confessions
Eddie Huang is famous for being a polymath—running restaurants, writing and directing movies, and hosting a podcast with his wife Natashia. And yet somehow, he found the time to write his debut novel, Come Undone, in about five days. The book follows Hubie, a man who approaches love the way he approaches a menu—always sampling, never committing—until he meets Anastasia, whose own hidden history makes her impossible to ignore.
Youtuber Duo Slushy Noobz Can’t Escape the Bit
For many, the gamer guy archetype likely conjures up a pretty damning mental image: a lone figure sitting in a dark room for hours on end, face illuminated by the glow of their monitor. Viewers never see them leave their room, let alone the lower half of their body. But YouTube duo Slushy Noobz—composed of Canadian content creators Hamzah and Martin—are smashing that stereotype to smithereens.
