Converting Offices and Hotels into Multifamily Housing Is One Answer to the Valley’s Housing Crisis
As demand for housing alternatives continues to grow, Caliber is applying its expertise in multifamily development in creative ways to provide new solutions across the Valley. This spring, the firm completed funding for the first phase of our SP10 project, the conversion of a 160-room hotel into 104 apartment units with Class A amenities in the Ahwatukee Foothills of South Phoenix. Construction is set to begin in the fall.
Council Post: Diversifying Private Credit Investments With Core-Plus Real Estate Strategies
Chris Loeffler is the CEO of Caliber (CaliberCos Inc.), an alternative asset manager and fund sponsor with approx. $2.9B in AUM and AUD. When targeting double-digit returns, private credit investments are a popular choice. Private credit can be a valuable part of a portfolio—but the asset class may be riskier than it seems, and relying on private credit as the only driver toward a given return target may be doing clients a disservice.
Council Post: Alternative Assets On The Rise: Redesigning Your Investment Portfolio
Chris Loeffler is the CEO of Caliber (CaliberCos Inc.), an alternative asset manager and fund sponsor with approx. $500M in AUM. getty The investment landscape is changing, and that was true even before seismic volatility shook the portfolios of most individual investors in 2022. Today, headwinds for the traditional portfolio of 60% public equities and 40% fixed income continue to build. Those are fueled, in part, by an increased understanding of and access to alternative investment options.
The Power of Purpose: A football storytelling tradition
I had a dream last night that was similar to many, but completely unique. I don’t remember most dreams, and I don’t attempt to place a lot of value on those that I do remember. One type of dream, however, occurs consistently. I am a fan at a basketball or football game at my college or high school. Something goes wrong and they desperately need me to play. I struggle to find the right jersey, pads or helmet, but eventually I get on the field or court and try to help the team.
Reaching Your Teaching Prime
Last week, I started reading the Sports Gene by David Epstein and jotted a few notes down about the development of teachers in relation to the chess masters Epstein was discussing. Last Monday, Matthew Kay tweeted this thread: My twitter presence is pretty scarce lately, but Matthew R. Kay is single handedly starting to pull me back in. More importantly, his tweet aligned with my thinking and motivated me even more to write this post.
Council Post: Private Real Estate: Five Challenges Facing Investors Today
Chris Loeffler is the CEO of Caliber (CaliberCos Inc.), an alternative asset manager and fund sponsor with approx. $500M in AUM. getty In the opening months of 2022, the private real estate sector has benefited from positive macroeconomic momentum, boosted by rising GDP, record levels of job growth, strong consumer spending and stimulus programs. The landscape, however, is not entirely serene.
Council Post: The Bitcoin ETF: Recognizing Its Potential Effect On Crypto Investing
Chris Loeffler is the CEO of Caliber (CaliberCos Inc.), an alternative asset manager and fund sponsor with approx. $500M in AUM. getty Because of the recent influx of crypto investors seeking to diversify their portfolios and protect their capital gains from the sale of digital assets, alternative investments like cryptocurrencies and nonfungible tokens (NFTs) have become a common segue for asset managers to connect with this new investor audience.
New Years Education Resolution - Create Space, Don’t Fill It
A few months ago, I was fortunate enough to take part in a retreat for educational leaders. While it was a bit disappointing to have to meet on Zoom again, the group quickly reminded me how rejuvenating it can be to simply be in the space of like-minded educators. In our first breakout room, we had the chance to check in and consider how we might learn from each other over the next day and a half. One member of our group asked if anyone else was surprised at how challenging this year has felt.
Promises to Keep
The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep. I don’t know what promises Robert Frost’s character needed to keep in his Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, but I was glad that my colleague shared these words in our final faculty meeting for worship before the break. It made me think about the promises that I think I have to keep.
Terasem Colloquium, December 10, 2021: VIDEO and impressions
Here is the full video of the Colloquium, with all talks and Q/As: Susan Schneider was expected to give a talk, but unfortunately she wasn’t able to participate. So in the first 15 minutes I opened the Colloquium, introduced all participants and talks, said something about Susan’s ideas, and offered some thoughts on consciousness and its preservation.
Lost and Found
About 5 years ago, I started writing this blog. At the time I was a classroom teacher and had been ruminating on the idea being lost as a positive. Now, as an administrator, I continue to find the value in being lost, although I always wonder about the title of my blog, which maybe should change. Today, I ran across two poems that reminded me of the importance of being lost, particularly in its ability to help us to be found.
Two Ted Lasso Tangents
It is simple, complicated, crazy, beautiful, and stupid enough. I like dark comedies. Not too dark, but dark enough to not be extremely obvious attempts at humor. I do love a good stupid comedy like Dumb and Dumber or Wedding Crashers, but I gravitate to the slightly darker comedies. Season one of Ted Lasso was far from dark comedy, but I bought into the optimistic, midwest nature of Ted juxtaposed with his many British counterparts.
The Lost Teacher
For all the 1990s basketball fans out there, and even some who just like Michael Jordan, the “Be Like Mike” commercials were a thing of beauty. It captured the 90s incredibly well and inspired many to drink more Gatorade, especially citrus cooler. (Side note, nostalgia made me think it was the greatest flavor ever.

Two Whys - Aligning Actions and Values to Inspire
Simon Sinek is well known for his talks on finding your why. Most of you have probably listened to his talk or heard it referenced before. People in all walks of life and professions have used it to dig deeper into their career or life choices. As a teacher or school leader, with the future of our children on our hands, I think it is question worth asking, not just once, but over and over. Why do I teach? Why am I a school leader?
A note for my son & Classroom artistry
Last night, after a day of eating leftovers, watching TV, playing board games and reading, I told my son we should turn the screens off and find something quiet to do before we dove in for a slice of pie and ice cream. Usually this means me reading in my chair and him going downstairs to the playroom and kicking a mini-soccer ball around. I pulled out my book as usual, but he unexpectedly opened up a notebook and started writing/drawing, I wasn’t sure which.
PedalSmarts.app- A Whole New Platform for Learning About Gear
Sub Title: The future of where players will go to find their next pedal?
Ernie Ball VPJR Tuner/Volume Expression Pedal
There are few things more important to a guitar performance than being in tune and having control of your volume. Unfortunately, these are so built-in to what players do that they don’t quite raise the spirits like a new dirt pedal or delay station will and are often under-represented due to price and real estate.

PreSonus Eris E8 XT Studio Monitors
Could these be the sweet spot? PreSonus released the Eris series studio monitors in 2013 to grab ahold of the mid-priced studio monitor market, focusing on audio quality and listening environment flexibility. The series (originally offered in 8” and 5.25” configurations) quickly became a best-seller for most retailers due to the PreSonus pedigree and quality-to-cost ratio.

Electro-Harmonix Bass9 Bass Machine
https://www.ehx.com/products/bass9 Is there more to this than the bass frequency spectrum it produces? Guitar players of heavier music (not to be confused with “heavier guitar players”) have always been envious of the low-end space bass and synths get to occupy, dropping to D, C, and even entire octaves down with the help of pitch shifters.
Electro-Harmonix Nano Operation Overlord Overdrive
When you need to be ready to battle! Electro-Harmonix released the Operation Overlord Allied Overdrive two years ago, providing a unique, mostly uncolored overdrive option with multi-instrument applications thanks to its variable input level selector and took things even further with true stereo ins/outs, active three-band EQ, and an integrated Boost section.
Harmony Rebel Double Cutaway Electric Guitar
Is this an "underrated gem"? Harmony Music Company began as a US-based Ukulele manufacturer in 1892 and rose to prominence in the 1920’s after its transfer to Sears and Roebuck in 1916 as a play to get into the music instrument world. Thanks to this distribution Harmony (and its Sears brand Silvertone) became one of the most widely sold stringed instrument brands in the US through the mid-70’s.
