What does it mean to be a journalist?

As Hemingway is rumored to have said: To find out the truth and to write about it, though that is very difficult.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Rachel Maddow, Seymour Hersh, Urvashi Vaid, Samuel Freedman, Dan Baum....

Why did you become a journalist?

I was one before I knew it, rhinking I was a promising novelist or world-changing activist, but ALWAYS by reporting/writing.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Get started as early as you can, and don't expect wealth.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Mid-day or mid-evening EST, for the initial contact.
