NASA and IBM to Speed AI Creation with New Foundation Models
NASA and IBM are working together to create foundation models based on NASA’s data sets — including geospatial data — with the goal of accelerating the creation of AI models. Foundation models are trained on large, broad data sets, then used to train other AI models by using targeted and smaller datasets. Foundation models can be used for different tasks and can apply information about one situation to another.
Expedia: 3 Tips for More Effective Unit Testing
There’s absolutely no point doing unit tests if they aren’t done correctly. Expedia’s Senior Software Engineer Lorenzo Dell’Arciprete recently wrote a helpful blog post that points out common unit test mistakes that cause some to be ineffective. Writing unit tests is quite possibly the least interesting part of the software development process, except maybe for the moment of relief when they pass. Sometimes. Because not all passes are passes and not all fails are fails.
DevPod: Uber's MonoRepo-Based Remote Development Platform
By 2017, Uber’s codebase was incredibly fragmented to the point where problems would bleed into library versions, build tools, dependency management and collaboration, and code sharing was deeply affected. So the company moved developers to a remote development environment, based on a monorepos run on a Kubernetes cluster. Uber’s build-strategy team recommended migrating to a monorepo architecture to host Uber’s code.
Azure Went Dark
And down went all Microsoft 365 services around the world. One popular argument against putting your business trust in the cloud is that if your hyper-cloud provider goes down, so does your business. Well, on the early U.S. East coast morning, it happened. Microsoft Azure went down and along with it went Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, Outlook, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, GitHub, Microsoft Authenticator, and Teams. In short, pretty much everything running on Azure went boom.
PLG Will Eliminate the Subscription-Based Software Model
I spent several years as a General Manager at Amazon Web Services and my teams launched two Tier 1 services: Amazon CloudSearch and Amazon OpenSearch. Like every product at AWS, these were scaled with a product-led growth (PLG) market motion: no gated features, no subscription tiers to choose from. Instead, a Usage-Based Pricing (UBP) model is used to charge based on consumption, directly correlated to the value being delivered to the user.
Choosing the Right Container Native Storage for AWS Public Cloud
|
With more independent software vendor (ISV) applications being packaged to be deployed via Kubernetes to allow for the simple shifting between execution venues, stateful workloads are becoming a standard pattern within these clusters. Kubernetes is on its way to becoming the industry standard for managing cloud native data applications, with the Data on Kubernetes community growing at a rapid pace.

It Happened to Me: How I Suddenly Owed AWS $13,000...
When my Amazon Web Services account was suspended I was very confused. It said my password was invalid but my account was suspended for nonpayment. Having never used AWS for anything other than exploration, I didn’t have anything to pay for. No email in my inbox. Then I checked my trash folder and there it was. A past due bill for $12,989.60. The panic set in. What did I do? How did this happen? What did I accidentally click to go from a $0.00 bill to a $12,989.60 overnight?
Google Brings Rust into Chromium Project
Google is now supporting third-party Rust libraries from C++ in the Chromium project. Dana Jansens, writing on the Google Security blog, writes that to start, the team is adding a production Rust toolchain to its build systems. Rust code will appear in the Chrome binary within the following year. It’s a big deal for Google to add Rust libraries to Chromium. It follows deep investments by Microsoft and Amazon Web Services into Rust programming.
A New Definition of Reliability
It’s no surprise that organizations with software products are prioritizing reliability as feature #1. In the software space, when we talk about “reliability” we’re referring to site reliability engineering. Google invented this practice as a way to implement DevOps with a better approach to software engineering. In truth, reliability is much more far reaching. Even within engineering, if you ask 10 engineers to define reliability, you’d likely get 10 different answers.
Java's History Could Point the Way for WebAssembly
It’s hard to believe that it’s been over 20 years since the great dotcom crash happened in 2001, which continues to serve as a harbinger of potential doom whenever cyclic tech is on a downward path. I remember quite distinctly hanging out with either unemployed or underemployed folks in the IT field shortly after the great crash in 2001. We were doing just that: hanging out with time on our hands.
2023 Web Tech Check-in: React Performance, PWAs, iOS Browsers
When Figma sold itself to Adobe last year, in one sense it was a triumph for web standards. Figma was built on WebGL, JavaScript and (latterly) WebAssembly. It was another sign of the continued strength of web technologies, which in many cases are now just as powerful as native apps. However, there are still several issues of concern to web standards watchers as we enter a new year.
Test Automation Tools Unite!
Test automation tools have been around for some time before cloud native applications became a trend. When it comes to integration testing, the most common pattern I’ve observed was teams containerizing and integrating those tools into their CI/CD pipelines, and then using them to connect to each one of their Kubernetes clusters.
Data, Analytics and AI: What Will Happen in 2023
As we roll into the first full business week of 2023, it’s a good time to consider what’s likely to take place in the data and analytics arena this year. There’s no shortage of opinions out there, of course. Like in past years, as 2022 came to a close, public relations folks happily shared with me industry predictions from their client’s brightest tech leaders and executives.
How to Overcome Challenges in an API-Centric Architecture
This is the second in a two-part series. For an overview of a typical architecture, how it can be deployed and the right tools to use, please refer to Part 1. Most APIs impose usage limits on number of requests per month and rate limits, such as a maximum of 50 requests per minute. A third-party API can be used by many parts of the system. Handling subscription limits requires the system to track all API calls and raise alerts if the limit will be reached soon.

How to Use Time-Stamped Data to Reduce Network Downtime sponsor-influxdata,sponsored-post-contributed, Data / Networking / Storage Telecommunication organizations need to ensure they have the necessary resources and technology to maintain service uptime SLAs. Increased regulations and emerging technologies forced telecommunications companies to evolve quickly in recent years.
SRE vs. DevOps vs. Platform Engineering
Over the last few years, many technology companies have been working on a common set of best practices — leveraging cloud technology by creating and deploying applications on the platform. These best practices can be categorized into three segments such as compartmentalization or containerization, consistent and continuous delivery, and develop observable systems. Organizations that are cloud native have changed dramatically from having large departments to nuclear development teams.
The Right Stuff for Really Remote Edge Computing
Suppose you operate popup clinics in rural villages and remote locations where there is no internet. You need to capture and share data across the clinic to provide vital healthcare, but if the apps you use require an internet connection to work, they can’t operate in these areas. Or perhaps you’re an oil and gas operator that needs to analyze critical warning data from a pressure sensor on a platform in the North Sea.

Agent-Based vs. Agentless Security: Which Approach Is Better? sponsor-orca,sponsored-post-contributed, A look at two strategies for deploying cloud security software along with tips on when each one does or doesn't make sense. There are two approaches to deploying cloud security software. The agent-based approach is tedious, difficult to manage and leaves you prone to gaps that may severely constrict your visibility into security risks, as well as your ability to respond to them quickly.
How to Get Started with HTTP/3
Like many around the world, as 2022 ended I looked forward to watching the World Cup. One day, I was watching the World Cup on my phone while walking my dog. As Team USA was about to score, I walked out of my Wi-Fi range, and my phone switched to a cellular connection. The stream paused and didn’t come back for about 15 seconds.

WebAssembly: 5 Predictions for 2023
In 2022, WebAssembly (often shortened to Wasm) catapulted into the spotlight. New Wasm startups arrived on the scene. Established companies announced support for Wasm. The Bytecode Alliance launched a number of Wasm standards. The Cloud Native Computing Foundation hosted two WasmDay events. And one of the biggest Wasm users, Figma, was acquired by Adobe for a staggering $20 billion. At its core, Wasm is a binary format.
Why Are We So Bad at Mean Time to Repair (MTTR)?
A recent survey uncovered a fact that I found extremely depressing: only 1% of companies are meeting their mean time to repair targets. That’s right, that means 99% of companies miss their targets.
Crossplane: What Most People Get Wrong (and How to Get It Right)
Crossplane is a popular open source Cloud Native Computing Foundation project that provides a framework to help you build your own opinionated cloud native control plane — complete with all of the policies, best practices and configurations that are important to your organization. Engineering Best Practices of CI Pipelines
Before the popularity of microservices architecture, developers had to build and deliver large software applications as single entities. Today a number of smaller applications are used simultaneously, each one focusing on a single aspect of business functionality. With smaller applications and teams with members with diverse backgrounds often working remotely, increased collaboration and reduced barriers between teams are essential features of an effective production environment.
How to Build an API-Centric Digital Architecture
This is the first of a two-part series. Just like with species, the ability to quickly evolve is a key competitive advantage for a digital enterprise — see “Digital Darwinism.” An API-centric approach is a key enabler for agility. In this post, we discuss a typical API-driven architecture, how it can be deployed, and the right tools for the job. Being agile enables digital enterprises to go to market faster and respond to changes quickly.
Doordash Building Isomorphic JavaScript Libraries
Isomorphic JavaScript libraries are helpful when running code both client-side and server-side. Building them comes with many challenges which include adding the right dependencies, creating a function declaration identical in both environments, and testing. The successful creation or abandonment of any isomorphic library includes constant obstacle solving or final decision on when the complexities of the build outweigh later efficiencies.
Multicloud vs. Hybrid Cloud: Key Comparisons and Differences
Multicloud vs. Hybrid Cloud: Key Comparisons and Differences sponsor-orca,sponsored-post-contributed, Cloud Services / Operations / Security The way the market has evolved over the past several years means that multicloud security often requires a different approach from hybrid cloud security. Multicloud and hybrid cloud architectures both involve connecting disparate infrastructures. You might think, then, that multicloud security tools and strategies should also work for hybrid cloud security.
Donald Knuth's 2022 'Christmas Tree' Lecture Is about Trees
This year, 2022 marks the 60th anniversary of that fateful day in 1962 when a 24-year-old Donald Knuth started writing “The Art of Computer Programming.” Now approaching his 85th birthday, Knuth has become almost a legend in the world of computer programming — and he’s still writing additional volumes for his massive analysis of algorithms. But every year, right around Christmas time, there’s another tradition.
What Is APIOps? (In Less than 500 Words)
Let’s dispense of introductions and keyword stuffing and get right into the answers you’re looking for — APIOps is a relatively new term that describes an approach to building APIs that combines: The automation, collaboration, quick iteration and focus on quality from a thriving DevOps culture. The single source of truth and emphasis on CI/CD pipelines from GitOps.
5 Software Security Goals All CTOs Should Prioritize
Companies providing digital services need to secure access to information to protect data that belongs to the organization, its customers and its business partners. When software is developed with security gaps, there is a risk that it can be exploited by cyberattacks, which have become more sophisticated in recent years. Mitigations such as asking a third-party company to run penetration tests can help.
Top 3 Ways to Lower TCO in 2023
The cost of doing business has never been higher for modern enterprises. And while no company can entirely avoid paying these costs, CIOs and CTOs play a vital role in reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO) of the technology. This blog post provides an overview of three ways in which IT leaders can reduce TCO in their organizations in 2023. Businesses can save money on technology costs by automating processes, improving efficiency, and looking for cost-effective cloud solutions. What Is TCO?
2022 a Golden Year as JavaScript Moves to the Edge
In Jan. 2022, The New Stack raised the question: “Will 2022 Be a Golden Age for Full-Stack JavaScript? The article drew on the work of developer and Best of JS creator Michael Rambeau, who tracks trending projects in the JavaScript ecosystem and assembles them into his yearly JavaScript Rising Stars, which ranks projects according to stars given on GitHub. It’s a compelling idea, this notion that JavaScript might be in a Golden Age.
6 Security Risks to Consider with WebAssembly
Programs and apps are a manifestation of ideas in a digital format. If you can dream it in other languages, WebAssembly can deliver it to the browser. From games ported from Unity to PDF editing on the web and leveraging interactive data from Jupyter and Rust, WebAssembly’s use cases are countless. WebAssembly (Wasm) is gaining traction to deliver high-performance client-side code that often cannot be created or executed by JavaScript, at least not in a performant way.
A Better Developer Experience Requires Better Testing Tools
Despite software development being more efficient, agile, and integrated than ever, we’re still missing an essential piece of the puzzle of efficient, high-quality pipelines. Most businesses are not considering their developer experience, and it shows, often in employee dissatisfaction surveys or worse yet in exit interviews. Developer experience combines interactions and feelings software engineers encounter as they work towards a goal.
WebAssembly Users a Mix of Backend and Full Stack Developers
WebAssembly Users a Mix of Backend and Full Stack Developers research, WebAssembly is cultivating a diverse user-base, with backend devs using WASM for cloud native work, and full-stack devs deploying it for Web development. The State of WebAssembly 2022 survey data indicates that not all Web Assembly (WASM) users are alike, with a divide emerging around backend developers and everyone else.
Identifying a Kube-Native Approach to Data Protection
Data protection isn’t usually top of mind for developers. Historically, developers had the benefit of working solely on functionality and could leave the less exciting but absolutely crucial aspects of infrastructure management to their team members in production. But with DevOps principles transforming the industry, it’s no longer possible for developers to leave production concerns to other teams.

Q&A with Peter Wang Co-Founder and CEO of Anaconda
The Python programming language has been around since 1991 and has continued its rise in popularity thanks to big data, machine learning, the continued proliferation of websites, automation, and so much more. Python is also one of the easiest languages to learn, so it’s very beginner-friendly and grows along with a developer’s skill. But what makes Python still so relevant?
Rethinking Security from Scratch: The Case for Shifting Container Security from the Edge to the Core
Here’s a simple possibility that is often overlooked but can have serious consequences: Building the smallest possible container image might break your existing operational security processes. In this blog post, you will see how new DevSecOps thinking is necessary as we look at the impact a development-led change can have on your operational security. Organizations are often accustomed to establishing an image-based trust system at the edge.
Taking Kubernetes to the People: How Cluster API Promotes Self-Service Infrastructure
Two key goals of Cluster API are to manage the full lifecycle of a Kubernetes cluster, including scaling up and scaling down the cluster, and to give infrastructure providers a common framework to build against so that everyone can have a common workflow irrespective of where they intend to consume CPUs, memory, or network resources.
Azure Resource Manager: The Secret Sauce of the Microsoft Cloud Strategy
