Chris Moran’s Biography

I spend my days changing the culture of the Guardian by capturing and analysing data, and then developing and executing strategy around it, and creating innovative digital products. I'm an expert in building narratives and simple processes that are essential in persuading people to make change happen. In the past few years I’ve been responsible for building the process that led us to refine and focus our editorial output, cutting the number of stories we produce by a third while increasing our audience and engagement. I’ve been editorial lead on multiple products, including our world-class Live App, our new Daily Edition App, increasing trust with our social timestamps and helping our journalists explain the world to our readers.

I previously spent seven years as the Audience Editor in the London newsroom, a role I originated. I built and led the team responsible for finding the widest, most relevant audience for The Guardian’s outstanding journalism across the internet, continually breaking audience records without sacrificing editorial standards. I defined the concept of responsible reach and have been critical in defining best digital practice at the Guardian. I am the lead editorial strategist and co-creator of Ophan, The Guardian’s class‐leading real-time analytics tool that began as a hack day project in 2012.
