Three Vignettes for Moog Subharmonicon and ASM Hydrasynth
Experimental Synth explorer Chris Stack breaks new ground by connecting the Subharmonicon and the Hydrasynth. Wikipedia defines the word vignette as “a short impressionistic scene that focuses on one moment or character and gives a trenchant impression about that character, an idea, setting, and/or object.” The Moog Subharmonicon is a fascinating beast. If your rig centers around Mother-32s and DFAMs, buying a Subharmonicon is a no-brainer.

Arturia MatrixBrute CV Sequencing for Non-Beginners
Arturia’s recent firmware update for the MatrtixBrute opens the door to new sequencing capabilities. The Arturia MatrixBrute is a full-featured analog synth that sounds great. Arturia’s recent 2.0 firmware update added a long list of well thought-out improvements. All of them are useful, but one that really caught my eye is Create your Own LFO (CYOLFO). CYOLFO lets you “draw” your own LFO shape using the button matrix.
How to Synthesize Vocal Sounds for Non-Beginners
Make your synth talk with subtractive synthesis and ring modulation. Recently I discovered it’s easy to make surprisingly realistic vocal sounds, called phonemes, using any subtractive synthesizer and a ring modulator. When you think about it, doesn’t it make sense? A ring modulator creates two sideband frequencies that are the sum and difference of the carrier and modulator frequencies. Vocal sounds are created with multiple formant frequency peaks.
External Audio Processing for Non-Beginners
Feed your synth audio from your phone or tablet, and synthesize your surroundings. Many years ago (probably before I got my first synth), I read that Brian Eno processed guitars and other sounds through his synthesizer, and that fired up my imagination. When I got my first synth that could process external audio, that’s exactly what I did with it. There was no turning back. Eno’s work with found sounds on the album My Life In the Bush Of Ghosts (Brian Eno & David Byrne, 1981) was a big inspiration.
Korg Minilogue XD for Non-beginners: Control Voltage Applications
Our resident experimental synthesist, Chris Stack, investigates a popular synthesizer’s control-voltage connectivity. I recently bought a Korg Minilogue XD and was pleasantly surprised to discover just how deep it is. Much of that depth comes from its two assignable control voltage inputs. In CV/Gate mode, the jacks act as standard pitch and gate inputs. In Modulation mode, you can assign them to any of 29 parameters.
Single-payer system would fix drug costs
This guest column was submitted by Rob Stone, MD, director of Hoosiers for a Commonsense Health Plan; and Chris Stack, MD, and Fran Quigley, who are with People of Faith for Access to Medicines.Hoosiers have seen the headlines about drug price increases, and many of us see the struggle firsthand. A vial of insulin can cost a person with diabetes 10 times as much as it did in the 1990s. The price of an EpiPen has risen 450 percent.
Trump is right: Negotiate for lower drug prices
All Hoosiers have seen the headlines about drug price increases, and too many of us see the struggle first-hand. A vial of insulin can cost a person with diabetes 10 times as much as it did in the late 1990s.The price of an EpiPen has risen 450%. Some new treatments for cancer and other diseases are priced as high as $750,000, even when taxpayers paid for the most critical research to develop those drugs.
