States have driven climate action until now. It’s time for the Australian government to step up
For more than a decade, Australia’s emissions reductions have been driven not by the federal government but by the states and territories, often in relative obscurity. State governments took the lead in driving rapid uptake of renewable energy, driving emissions down even as the federal “climate wars” raged. But the heavy-lifting era of the states may be coming to an end.
The world regulated sulfur in ship fuels − and the lightning stopped Original
If you look at a map of lightning near the Port of Singapore, you’ll notice an odd streak of intense lightning activity right over the busiest shipping lane in the world. As it turns out, the lightning really is responding to the ships, or rather the tiny particles they emit. Using data from a global lightning detection network, my colleagues and I have been studying how exhaust plumes from ships are associated with an increase in the frequency of lightning.

PERSPECTIVE: Inconvenient truths about energy Original
Editor’s note: Chris Wright has been nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as Energy secretary and this column is reprinted from March 27, 2022. The energy transition is not happening. Or not nearly at the pace that everyone believes or wishes. At rates the “transition” is set to finish in the mid-2600s. The U.N. Rio Convention and subsequent Kyoto Protocol launched the energy transition drive in 1992.

From London to Sussex and Devon, breweries are cropping up all over the country as our national thirst for quality lager blossoms, driven by our obsession with provenance and support of independents. Good news, then, that summer is here and with it a season of kicking back in the garden with an ice-cold beer among friends. Who’s in?
