War Costs Make Up a Third of the $87.6 Billion Supplemental Request

Funding for the Defense Department The supplemental requests $67.1 billion for the DOD. The transmittal letter notes that the request includes “military personnel and readiness expenses, operational costs to rebuild stocks expended by DOW, classified programs, and other key expenses” incurred during Operation Epic Fury. Russ Vought, the Office of Management and Budget director, told Congress on June 30 that the Iran war has cost about $30 billion—about half the funds requested for the DOD.

With a ceasefire agreement signed, negotiations ongoing, and the Strait of Hormuz open, the latest U.S. campaign against Iran that began in February 2026 may be ending. Congressional attention now turns to the war’s cost—it needs to be covered, as neither the FY 2026 Department of Defense (DOD) budget nor the president’s FY 2027 budget proposal include war costs. CSIS estimates war costs to be around $40 billion ($34 billion to $42 billion).

Campaigns against Iran and its proxies—and, for Patriot interceptors, aid to Ukraine—have made the problem more acute. Alongside replenishing its own stocks, the United States also has to fulfill orders from allies and partners. Decisions on how to allocate new production have already created bilateral friction, and this friction will continue for the next few years as demand outpaces supply. The Trump administration understands the urgency.
