BANNER ELK — The community of Elk Valley just outside of Banner Elk, faced one of the most significant wildfires in Avery County’s recent history on November 17 and 18. What began as a small outdoor debris burn quickly erupted into a 160-acre wildfire, fueled by steep terrain, high winds and a stretch of dry weather, a dangerous combination that pushed local resources to their limits. The blaze began mid-afternoon on Monday, Nov. 17, when dry brush ignited from a nearby home’s debris fire.

Newland Christmas Tree Festival lights up Avery Square

NEWLAND — Downtown Newland was aglow with holiday cheer as the Inaugural Newland Christmas Tree Festival was held on Friday and Saturday, November 21 and 22. The two-day celebration transformed the Avery Square into a winter wonderland filled with lighted Fraser Fir trees, festive music and hometown spirit. The festival brought together many High Country tree growers and community groups, each decorating a live Fraser Fir tree to showcase Avery County’s signature crop.

Avery County NWTF gives back with Thanksgiving turkey giveaway

NEWLAND — The Avery County Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) spread the spirit of giving on Saturday, Nov. 22, hosting its first-ever community event since forming earlier this year. Chapter members gathered at the Avery County Agricultural Extension Center in Newland to distribute more than 80 frozen turkeys, free of charge, to families in need ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.
