Candlelit Cathedral Dress
I love adding special effects to textiles, and programmable LED strips have changed the game — but sometimes a look calls for more of a candlelit cathedral than a rainbow rave! This project uses flickering LEDs to illuminate semi-sheer fabric panels in the style of stained glass. You can upcycle an existing skirt, or sew your own garment from scratch. Go for vibrant, jewel-toned fabrics — they pop the most when illuminated from behind.
Single-mitosis dissection of acute and chronic DNA mutagenesis and repair - Nature Genetics
Abstract How chronic mutational processes and punctuated bursts of DNA damage drive evolution of the cancer genome is poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate a strategy to disentangle and quantify distinct mechanisms underlying genome evolution in single cells, during single mitoses and at single-strand resolution.
The dynamic genetic determinants of increased transcriptional divergence in spermatids - Nature Communications
Abstract Cis-genetic effects are key determinants of transcriptional divergence in discrete tissues and cell types. However, how cis- and trans-effects act across continuous trajectories of cellular differentiation in vivo is poorly understood.
She Builds Robots
<< Project Gallery By Christina Ernst What inspired you or what is the idea that got you started? In 2017 I entered my local hackathon with a programmable light-up dress. On demo day, I was unprepared for the enthusiasm I got from girls visiting my booth, with some asking for instructions to recreate the dress. As someone who was never into coding at a young age, it made me think a lot about the value of presenting tech in traditionally feminine contexts like design and textiles.
Staged developmental mapping and X chromosome transcriptional dynamics during mouse spermatogenesis
Abstract Male gametes are generated through a specialised differentiation pathway involving a series of developmental transitions that are poorly characterised at the molecular level. Here, we use droplet-based single-cell RNA-Sequencing to profile spermatogenesis in adult animals and at multiple stages during juvenile development. By exploiting the first wave of spermatogenesis, we both precisely stage germ cell development and enrich for rare somatic cell-types and spermatogonia.

Ageing-associated DNA methylation dynamics are a molecular readout of lifespan variation among mammalian species
Here we have shown that ageing-associated DNA methylation is a dynamic correlate of lifespan among mammalian species and that these methylation dynamics are measuring cellular ageing as opposed to just chronological age. Crucially, our work shows that, in the context of different mammalian species, the rate of methylation dynamics at aDMPs predict lifespan. That is, aDMPs are more than just a measure of chronological age.
The emergence of piRNAs against transposon invasion to preserve mammalian genome integrity
MILI is the first PIWI protein to be expressed during development, starting at E13.5 in PGCs with a dynamic expression profile up until the round spermatid stage30, 60, 61. In contrast, MIWI2 is only expressed during a short period of time, starting at E14.5 until shortly after birth with protein levels being undetectable by P453, 61. This expression window largely coincides with mitotic arrest of PGCs and de novo DNA methylation.
