Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Freelancer for NOW magazine while I was still in university.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I got a chance to try my friend's old Underwood. The keys got stuck.

How is social media changing news?

For better: information spreads beyond traditional media users ... and worse: misinformation spreads through emotional manipulation.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Giving people information to: understand their community, illuminate things that need change, or make their lives easier.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email, Twitter, InMail, text... Basically anything that archives the pitch and doesn't involve interrupting what I'm currently working on.

What's your favorite social network?

I get news from Twitter and Facebook, sources from LinkedIn and Instagram, trends from TikTok and Snapchat, ideas from Pinterest and Reddit.

Who do you wish followed you?

I aim to create dialogue between all kinds of people, so I'm happy if it's a decision maker, vulnerable person, powerful person or anyone!

Why did you become a journalist?

I went to the student newspaper with my dad's old camera aiming to take pictures. The wily arts editor said, "If you write about it, too..."

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I actually spent my spare time volunteering at a local hospital (and playing piano). I had no idea at the time I would head into journalism.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I was the assigning editor on this story about a dancer who turned her grief at her father's death into art that offers hope: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/article-grief-transformed/

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Multimedia. Data visualization. Coding. And think outside traditional news outlets.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Open to pitches any time. I apologize that I can't answer all messages, but will often file things away for potential future ideas.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Basically: please publicize my product.

What's your favorite drink?

Coffee. I drink it for the antioxidants ;)

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Drinking coffee (see previous question about my favourite drink).
