Looking at the different ways to test content
Emileigh is a content designer at 18F, and Christine is a content strategist who works with the Government Digital Service (GDS) in the UK. They met for the first time on a sweltering summer day in D.C. A quick cup of (iced) coffee turned into a months-long, transatlantic conversation on the different ways writers can test online content to see whether it needs improving. This post was first published on the GDS blog.
Guest post: looking at the different ways to test content
Today we hear from two content experts sharing their thoughts about testing content. Christine works with GDS as a trainer, and is a content strategist. Emileigh is a lead content designer and strategist working at 18F in the USA. They met for the first time on a sweltering summer day in Washington, DC. A quick cup of (iced) coffee turned into a months-long, transatlantic conversation on the different ways writers can test online content to see whether it needs improving.
How to get people to use your content style guide
We don’t know each other, but chances are you’ve read something I’ve written. I’ve been writing words for websites for the last 10 years and during the past 18 months I had the chance to do something quite special: I trained 1,500 people how to write for GOV.UK. The project was huge. More than 300 government departments, agencies and arm’s length bodies had to move to a single domain. User needs would have to be assessed. Content would have to fit into new formats.
A way for teams to work together better
This perk is for you to tell us that you love the idea but aren't yet ready to buy a deck of cards. To thank you for your support we'll send you a personalised tweet and add your name to our website as a supporter. We'll also add your email address to our newsletter so you'll be the first to know when the results of our research and cards are ready. We'll also send you special offers when they're ready.
Create a better user experience by changing the way you write
As a copywriter who’s written online content for the likes of BBC, Yahoo and Nokia, I have always thought about how the text appears on web pages. I think the way it looks is almost as important as the words you write, because users have to be persuaded to start reading. I’ve been training people how to write for GOV.UK for the last year and in the sessions I talk about how content is part of the user experience (UX).
