Billionaire James Packer has more than doubled his investment in the US sharemarket to just shy of $US800m ($1.2bn), taking massive bets on the future of Facebook and chipmaker Nvidia. The Australian reports the headlong dive into tech and the sudden reshaping of his portfolio has seen about a quarter of his wealth moved into three listed companies – Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta Platforms, Nvidia Corporation and software behemoth Adobe.

Two weeks ago, in ‘The FIGJAM philanthropist’, Independent Australia discussed Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s claim, reported in the Daily Telegraph, that he donates his entire prime ministerial salary to “charity”. This claim was used, of course, by the Government to counter television commercials run by Labor that Turnbull is so rich he is “out of touch” with how ordinary people live and the financial pressures they're under.
