Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first experience in a professional capacity was for a local weekly newspaper which, ironically, my gr-gr-gr grandparents founded.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes! Someday, when I write the book that's been brewing in my head for years, I'm dead set on using a typewriter for the manuscript.

How is social media changing news?

Social media places news at our fingertips, making it more competitive, more urgent, more timely, more, more, more...

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

I must admit, it puts a smile on my face when friends refer to me as Ms. Lane. Lois Lane has been a favorite since childhood.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To be a journalist means to put into words what others can't. Or won't. Everyone has a story to tell and every story deserves telling.

What's your favorite social network?

I utilize Facebook most often, possibly because I am a millennial. Although, Pinterest is life-changing, but in a different, less social way.

Who do you wish followed you?

Follows from editors and publishers from major publications and platforms are always exciting! Any and all are welcome and appreciated!

Why did you become a journalist?

My grandpa was an editor, my gr-gr-grandpa a news man and Henry Ford's publicist. My gr-gr-gr-grandpa was a publisher. It's in my DNA.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I was never lucky enough to attend a high school large enough for a school newspaper. If they had one, I would have worked there!

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Several, although I am always proud of my work regarding veterans and mental health.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Take messy action. Fear of starting is disabling. Just start. Something is better than nothing and also much more rewarding.

What's your favorite drink?

I'm ashamed to say I love a good ol' Mountain Dew, especially in the can.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Anywhere and everywhere with my nose in a book.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I could never pick just one, as so many publications are noteworthy in their own right.
