Physiological plasticity in a Moorean phototrophic sponge is decoupled from microbiome shifts
Abstract Sponges are prominent members of coral reef communities and contribute to nutrient cycling through multiple pathways. Many reef sponges host abundant microbial symbionts, including photosymbionts that can drive substantial carbon and nitrogen uptake and processing within the holobiont, likely reducing host dependence on other resource pools.
Farming for the Future
Story by Christopher Freeman/ USDA RD PIO The State of North Dakota is roughly 70,000 square miles. Agricultural land occupied by family farms and ranches accounts for about 60,000 of those square miles.
Quality metrics for enhanced performance of an NGS panel using single-vial amplification technology
Abstract Aims Targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) panels, which identify genomic alterations, are the stronghold of molecular oncology laboratories. In spite of technological advances, the quantity and quality of DNA from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue and paucicellular specimens are barriers to successful sequencing. Here, we describe an NGS assay employing single tube stem-loop inhibition mediated amplification technology that delivers highly accurate results with low input DNA.

Reducing Medical Admissions and Presentations Into Hospital through Optimising Medicines (REMAIN HOME): a stepped wedge, cluster randomised controlled trial
The known: Pharmacists integrated into general practice teams improve a number of clinical and non‐clinical patient outcomes, but the impact on hospital re‐admissions and emergency department presentations by recently hospitalised patients is unknown.
Medication use and cognitive impairment among residents of aged care facilities
Abstract Background Potentially inappropriate polypharmacy is common in residential aged care facilities (RACF). This is of particular concern among people with cognitive impairment who, compared with cognitively intact residents, are potentially more sensitive to the adverse effects of medications. Aim To compare the patterns of medication prescribing of RACF residents based on cognitive status.
Investigating the management of potentially cancerous nonhealing mouth ulcers in Australian community pharmacies
We sought to examine the management and referral of nonhealing mouth ulcer presentations in Australian community pharmacies in the Greater Brisbane region. Trained simulated patients visited 220 randomly selected community pharmacies within the Greater Brisbane region in 2016. Simulated patients enacted two nonhealing (>1 month) mouth ulcer scenarios: A direct product request (DPR) (n = 110) and a symptom‐based request (SBR) (n = 110).
Review of structured guides for deprescribing
Structured guides to deprescribing include algorithms, flow charts or tables aimed at guiding the clinician through sequential steps in deciding which medications used by an individual patient should be targeted for discontinuation after due attention to all relevant factors. They take account of the complexity of polypharmacy and prompt a more systematic appraisal of all medications being used.
Review of structured guides for deprescribing
Avoiding inappropriate polypharmacy has become increasingly recognised as a safety imperative for older patient care. Deprescribing is an active process of reviewing all medications being used by individual patients that prompts clinicians to consider which medications have unfavourable risk–benefit trade-offs in the context of illness severity, advanced age, multi-morbidity, physical and emotional capacity, life expectancy, care goals and personal preferences.
