My wife grew up in Tucson, which means we've made the eight-hour drive from Santa Fe more times than I care to count. On those earliest road trips, as we headed west on I-10, I remember seeing the Chiricahua Mountains for the first time out the left-hand window, along with the exit signs for the national monument. I also recall being surprised that there was a national monument in what looked like such a desolate place. The Chiricahuas will fool you.

So when a federal judge in El Paso halted border wall construction across the Big Bend region on October 2, I was grateful to have something different to report: good news, even if it turns out not to be permanent.

A Million Comments. Now What?

Earlier this week, on October 6, the public comment period on the proposed repeal of the Roadless Rule closed, and the response was more than just lopsided. It was a rout. Repealing the rule would lift the national ban on new roads and most commercial logging across roughly 45 million acres of national forest, leaving those decisions to each forest's own management plan. Conservation organizations tracked more than 1 million letters asking the Forest Service to keep the rule.
