What was your first job as a journalist?

My first post-collegiate job was as a reporter for a bilingual newspaper in Atlanta, Mundo Hispancio. Still miss that job today.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I grew up on them.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Most recently: Eileen Fitzgerald and Roz Friendly from Alaska Daily. All time: Bugs Raplin from Bob Roberts.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means that I'm using my skills to do what I was put on this earth to do -- tell stories that make a difference.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

Can't think of any.

What's your favorite social network?

I use many, wouldn't say any are a favorite.

Who do you wish followed you?

Henry David Thoreau, from the grave.

Why did you become a journalist?

To enable Americans to make informed decisions that are in the best interests of our communities and country -- and maybe change the world.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Started working for a school paper in eighth grade, when our newspaper teacher changed my life.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

1. A story about an animal shelter that led to a record-breaking number of adoptions. 2. A Salon story about the mental disorder of hoarding.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Recognize that financial rewards are likely minimal, and that making a difference is why we do the work.

When's the best time to pitch you?

I don't get many pitches as I'm a freelancer, but anytime.

What's your favorite drink?

Coca-Cola. I'm from Atlanta.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

On my bike riding along Sligo Creek and the Anacostia, or hiking on the Northwest Branch.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Washington Post.
