NEW YORK — A great play should be great again and again, given a great cast, crew and production. Certainly that's true of August Wilson's masterful “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone,” now on Broadway for the third time. “Fences” is Wilson's most successful play, but of the 10 in his majestic American Century Cycle, “Joe Turner” was his favorite. Wilson's true masterpiece is the whole cycle, indivisible. But “Joe Turner” is at its heart. He wrote it right after “Fences,” almost in direct contrast.

It tells the tale of a mermaid named Ariel who is fascinated by humans. She spends her days at the surface admiring humans.
