Years ago, a reader with an embroidery machine sent me this. By “this” I mean the thing in the photo. I don’t know exactly what to call it, but it is awesome. During one of John Brown’s many phases, he wrote a column for Good Woodworking magazine called “The Anarchist Woodworker,” and it featured this little guy holding a bomb. I’ll be honest: I have no idea if JB was an anarchist, or if he just liked being a contrarian. I would never use violent imagery. But I get it.

A sad loaner saw that has been kinked to death. It couldn’t cut a fart. For many years, I freely encouraged students to borrow my tools during class to give them a try. After all, where else will a new woodworker get to try a handplane that is perfectly tuned, sharp and ready to go? But one day a student bent my Lie-Nielsen dovetail saw. It wasn’t just a little kink. It was like they put the sawplate in the kerf and tried to spin the saw like a salad shooter. It was my fault, of course.
