That star-studded event included Kate Hudson, who would go on to be nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards.

Lido Theater Launches New Live Entertainment Programming with Music and Comedy Lineup

The Balboa Theater began showing movies in the 1920s and turned into an art house showing classics and avant garde movies (including midnight showings of Rocky Horror Picture Show) until it closed in 1992. The Port Theater in Corona del Mar is another classic movie theater that showed first run films and was renovated as a luxury theater. It is currently closed for maintenance and renovations.

Author Nancy Gardner. NB Indy file photo. Robert Gardner was a colorful judge in Orange County that loved to go bodysurfing—sometimes between hearing cases. Judge Gardner was also the author of “The Art of Body Surfing” (1972) and “Bawdy Balboa” (1992), about growing up in Newport Beach. Judge Gardner passed away in 2005 at age 93, but his daughter, Nancy Gardner, has continued the family legacy.
