Between last year’s 80th anniversary of the official end of World War II and recent reports showing a rise in antisemitism, there has been renewed interest in Long Island’s untold role during the war. Little is known or mostly forgotten about the shadow wars waged locally with Nazi foreign agents, who viewed the thousands of miles of coastline near New York City and the main hubs of Grumman and Republic Aviation as a prize for the Reich.

Hurricane Belle 50 years later: forgotten, but devastating

Fifty years ago, Hurricane Belle left about half of Long Islanders without power and forced thousands more to evacuate when the storm made landfall at Jones Beach on Aug. 10, 1976. Belle was classified as a major category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 120 mph when its trajectory had Long Island in its sights, triggering panic.

Long Island Museum (LIM) in Stony Brook is featuring a new exhibit, Long Island in the 70’s, that revisits suburban life during the 1970s. One of the exhibit’s many features is its exploration of how the South Shore was shaped environmentally, politically, and socially. At the center of the exhibit’s retelling of the social changes is Bay Shore resident Frank Romeo, who shared his homecoming experience after his deployment in Vietnam.
