Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
Sports agate clerk, Fort Myers News-Press
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Everything. Journalism at its purest form is the search for truth.
What's your favorite social network?
None.
Why did you become a journalist?
Mostly because of my love of sports and writing.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No. I did a little for my junior high newspaper. I had no idea that I wanted to do this for a career until I was graduating college.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Don't do it unless you absolutely can't not do it. If that's you, give it everything you've got.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Afternoons, definitely.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
"How would you like to be your own boss?" Over the previous four years I had been part of three staffs that were completely liquidated.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
On a laptop.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That it's easy, or an easy job.
