1 Introduction The concept of corneal transplantation to replace an opaque human cornea with a transparent animal cornea was first suggested by Franz Riesinger in 1824 [1, 2]. Even though the first reported pig-to-human corneal xenotransplantation was done in 1838 [3], decades before the first attempt of corneal allotransplantation in 1905 [4], xenotransplantation paved the way to allotransplantation due to insurmountable xenogeneic immune reaction in the past.

Key Points Question Is visual impairment associated with suicide risk, and if so, what factors contribute to the association? Findings In this systematic review and meta-analysis including 31 studies and 5 692 769 unique individuals, visual impairment was associated with an increased risk of suicide, including suicidal ideation, suicidal behavior, and suicide death. This elevated risk was particularly pronounced among adolescents with visual impairment.
