What was your first job as a journalist?
I wrote for a cultural magazine with very few readers but with a very nice layout. I learnt a lot about publishing and conducting interviews.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, I DID! This is how I learnt to type. Computers have changed everything. Including how we build a paragraph.
How is social media changing news?
It's a radical change. As readers, we find the news on every social platform now. As journalists, we have to rethink how we do our job.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It means to have the curiosity and determination to understand what is happening around us and explain it to our readers.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
By email.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Primarily Google, Twitter, Breaking News, Facebook, news websites.
What's your favorite social network?
Despite it all, it's still Twitter.
Who do you wish followed you?
Top influencers and younger readers.
Why did you become a journalist?
Because I was curious and I wanted to have access to what was around me and explain it to readers, engaging with them.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
We did not have one at school. But I worked for a university magazine, it was one of my first collaborations.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I am working on several stories about the future of the food and beverage industry in the US
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Be determined, don't give up, be curious, be passionate. But know that you will not earn as much as in other professions.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Any time. I regularly check my email and I try to respond as quickly as possible.
What's your favorite drink?
Red wine and beer share the top spot.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
On the couch reading news on gadgets while watching TV, cooking, or out with my lovely husband and friends.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I like the Economist, Reuters, and many many others.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Food is not only about recipes. It's about understanding what we (will) eat and how and why we get it into our plate.
