Hidden Gems of Game Design Vol 50
Plenty of amazing games go unnoticed and not widely played, for various reasons. Maybe it’s a diamond in the rough, or the marketing wasn’t there, or it could be a game ahead of its time. This month, we've reached a major milestone in this iconic SUPEJUMP feature: our 50th Volume, a half-century of Hidden Gems! For this special issue, I gave the writers an additional challenge – pick a game from your childhood that you never heard anyone else talk about. Addams Family Values. Source: Author.
Hotel Barcelona Explores Our Humanity in Fascinating Ways
The world we live in now is daunting. We are constantly bombarded with headlines and advertisements that either grab your attention or make you want to look away in disgust. Video games help us by allowing us to escape into a worry-free environment where we can confront our problems head-on without any consequences or regret. However, sometimes we should be reminded of the impact of our emotions from playing video games, as I experienced with Hotel Barcelona.

Split Fiction: A Captivating Co-Op Spectacle
Hazelight Studios is one of the most unique video game developers in recent years. After hitting it big with the release of A Way Out in 2018 through Electronic Arts’ gaming label EA Originals, they revolutionized the co-op genre with the emotionally delightful It Takes Two in 2021.
Splodey: A Challenging Pixelated Platformer
Sometimes, you find a game that constantly keeps you on your toes. Usually, it would be defeating challenging enemies and bosses from the Souls series made by FromSoftware or replaying levels multiple times in a brutal platformer like Super Meat Boy. But then you find a game that makes you want to perfect your skills in the hopes that you can earn some personal recognition for all the hard work that you put into it. I am talking about Splodey, from Send It Studios.
VOICES: Issue 1 will put the people of Dayton, not the politicians in Columbus, in charge
Just take a look at the (which, by the way, was found by the Ohio Supreme Court to be unconstitutional): Why does District 40 reach all the way around the city of Dayton, grabbing Trenton in the south and Huber Heights in the north? Or look at the : Why does District 40 now reach in and grab all of Miamisburg, deep inside District 37? It’s because these were the best ways to rig the maps and maximize seats for the politicians in charge of the redistricting process.
Xbox Serves Up a Full-Course Gaming Experience for 2024
For a while, it seemed like Xbox would never truly release any quality titles for their platform; little did we know they were busy cooking up something special. As a lifelong fan of Xbox, I wanted to be excited about the titles that they were making.

Supplice is a Love Letter to Boomer Shooters of Old
Before I begin, I have a confession: I don't have a ton of experience playing boomer shooters. While I have always been a fan of shooters, first and third-person, I never stepped out of my comfort zone to find a boomer shooter that I would enjoy. But not too long ago I tried Supplice on PC and started to understand why this shooter sub-genre is starting to make a prominent re-appearance in the gaming industry.

Hidden Gems of Game Design Volume 16
There are plenty of amazing games that go unnoticed and are not played widely, for one reason or another. Maybe it's a diamond in the rough, or the marketing wasn't there, or it could be a game ahead of its time. For this monthly series, I've asked my fellow writers on SUPERJUMP to pick a game they think is deserving of a chance in the spotlight. Let us know your favorite hidden gems in the comments.

Rooftop Renegade: A Speedrunner's Dream Come True
Certain games cater to different audiences with various genres, but none more so than the speedrunning community. Gamers often come across news stories about players breezing through titles such as Elden Ring or the latest RPG, like Starfield, in just a few hours. But sometimes a game emerges that caters to these fans with a lightning-fast pace, responsive gameplay, vibrant visuals, and an electrifying soundtrack that brings joy to the player’s ears.
Zombie Admin: Working for a Living, With the Living Dead
The zombie genre is one of the most popular forms of entertainment. Like any other genre, it has the occasional flow where it becomes insanely popular, and then it instantly gets left to the wayside, becoming a rotting dead corpse. Certain shows and movies like The Walking Dead and World War Z have received video game tie-in releases that have become successful in their own right, making the genre relevant again.
Xbox Games Showcase Predictions: The Postmortem
Xbox's summer showcase has officially happened. So how did our SUPERJUMP writers do with their picks? Surprisingly, we got quite a few predictions correct on this event. Coming out of the show, it felt like we got a clear idea of what Xbox will release in the next year or so by revealing titles about which we all wanted more information. Around twenty-seven games were shown with eleven first-party games getting announced.
City of Beats: A Groovy, Techno Twin-Stick Rogue-Lite
Many rogue-lites have their own distinct charm and personality that makes them stand out from all of the other genres in gaming. But it's how the game developers make them that keeps it engaging for the player.Certain rogue-lites like Hades and Returnal are developed in such a way that keeps players coming back for more. Their descriptive stories and vibrant worlds allow players to keep playing them in order to have a successful run.
Predicting the Xbox Games Showcase
Opinion What will Microsoft pull out of the hat at their 2023 showcase? It's always exciting to watch a major gaming event, especially if it's from a publisher that's experienced some bumpy terrain along the way. For several years, we as gamers were promised new first-party games that would demonstrate the exciting possibilities that come from Xbox, even going as far back as the Xbox One generation.
PlayStation Showcase Predictions - Postmortem
The first PlayStation showcase in more than 600 days is done and dusted. So how did the SUPERJUMP staff fare with their picks? Not well, as it turned out, but I'm guessing that is true for a large number of predictors out there. This felt like a strange show from Sony, more of an extended State of Play than a true showcase. Thirty four games were shown but only three first-party studios were present.
Predicting the PlayStation Showcase
Preview What to expect when Sony is expecting For those of us who write about video games, nothing beats a big showcase event. And when it's coming from the biggest name in consoles after a wait of almost two years... that's pretty hard to beat. Predicting what's going to happen in the showcase comes in a close second, though, so we asked our writers to see what they thought might happen.
I'm an Achievement/Trophy Hunter
Achievements and trophies have been a staple in gaming for a long time. Since the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were released in 2005 and 2006, players have earned these accolades from playing some of their favorite games. You know you did something special whenever you unlock an achievement or trophy and hear those sweet, now-iconic sounds.
Whalien - Unexpected Guests: An Enjoyable, Playful Puzzle Platformer
Sometimes the best platformers you find are the ones you don't usually come across. While some of the best platformer series like Super Mario Bros., LittleBigPlanet, and Sonic the Hedgehog get worldwide recognition, there are even some indie platformers that cater to a specific, niche audience.
Blasting Onto the Leaderboards With Shatter Remastered Deluxe
Throughout the years there have been many arcade shoot-em-ups that people have loved and appreciated. Games like Space Invaders and Centipede in the 70s and 80s eventually led to newer releases with different gameplay hooks, like the bullet-hell Ikaruga with its vertical shooting and phasing through light and dark projectiles, and side-scrolling shooters like Cuphead with its 1920s cartoon aesthetic.
Hidden Gems of Game Design Volume 5
There are plenty of amazing games that go unnoticed and are not widely played for one reason or another.
Impressions From the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer Open Beta
Call of Duty is a series that has always impressed me with its bombastic and energetic single-player campaigns. While I usually play the story modes to completion, I don't normally check out the multiplayer, which is normally the bread and butter that first-person shooter fans eat up. But after playing the open beta this past weekend, I might give the multiplayer mode a fair shake this time.

As Dusk Falls Has Players Toying With Fate
Many choice-driven games vary in degrees of quality. Games like The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us, developed by Telltale Games, feature believable, dramatic stories with nuanced characters. The choices made with these characters bring unforeseen consequences that affect the world around you.
Octodad: Dadliest Catch Has Frustrating, Absurdly Fun Co-Op
As an experienced gamer, I tend to play games by myself. I usually experience a game alone in my room where I can appreciate the subtle nuances like its story, characters, gameplay, and systems to absorb it all to get my perspective on it. But as I've grown older, I have started to play more co-op games with other people and I have decided to let them join me in this unique hobby of mine.
‘Luke Cage’ Season 2: An emotional, conflicted Luke Cage
Disclaimer: This review contains some spoilers for this season and previous episodes of Luke Cage Season two of Luke Cage is the most perplexed that we have seen from Luke in any prior Marvel show. Meaning: This season had some strong emotional depth and personal stakes. The writing is tight, the acting outstanding, and the themes that are present are heartbreaking. It’s certainly different from the first season, but how does it stand out? Is it great? Well, it is both good and bad.
‘Detroit: Become Human’ is an ambitious sci-fi drama with flawed features
Disclaimer: This review was conducted on a launch PS4. You would certainly want to give credit to Quantic Dream for their branching storylines as the credits started to roll after I finished my playthrough of Detroit: Become Human. Detroit explores an interesting idea of a world where androids have become abused by humans through our misguided use of technology, while looking at artificial intelligence having conscious feelings like love and empathy.
‘A Way Out’ is a unique co-op story-driven action adventure game featuring a charismatic duo
Disclaimer: This playthrough is based on the PS4 version of the game. As my co-op partner and I approached the climax of A Way Out, the cinematic 1970’s-set prison-break adventure from Hazelight Studios, I thought it had ran out of steam. I was instantly hooked for about the first five hours, which does a terrific job of blending drama with action, and emotion with lighthearted moments.
‘Tomb Raider’ might be the movie that breaks the video game movie curse
When a video game is adapted to film, most of the time it doesn’t gain much success. While some of the video game-to-film adaptations like Mortal Kombat and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Timemanaged to earn some respect among video game fans and viewers, other films like Double Dragon, Street Fighter, and the infamous Super Mario Bros. failed and are some of the worst of their kind.
Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ is a unique cultural celebration fit for a king
Like with every Marvel film, many fans have been awaiting the newest installment that would shape the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even after 10 years of building up this cinematic universe, Marvel always manages to break the traditional comic book mold by focusing on superheroes that the general public doesn’t usually know. Hence why Marvel has now released the newest film in the franchise: Black Panther.
‘Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus’: Fighting Nazis for American freedom
This review is for the Xbox One version of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and may contain minor spoilers. Killer Nazis, robotic heavy soldiers, robotic soldiers that shoots lasers, and even robotic dogs that breathe fire: These are just some of the enemies that B.J. Blazkowicz has to face within the brutal setting of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. This game comes from Swedish developer MachineGames and is the second game in the Wolfenstein series, published by Bethesda.
‘Marvel’s The Punisher’ is a powerful story about an anti-hero looking for justice
There is always something exciting coming from Marvel Studios. After releasing many movies that as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, many video games on the horizon like Marvel’s Spider-Man or The Avengers from Square Enix, and even TV shows like Agents of Shield and some of Netflix’s other Marvel shows like Daredevil and Luke Cage, comic book fans and fans of Marvel are always looking for the next big thing.
The Drive 100: The Most Pointless but Awesome Car Features of 2015
Those lucky 375 who spent over a million bucks to own a McLaren P1 hybrid supercar, arguably the definitive rocketship of our era, got some perks: matching luggage, helmet, race suit and an exact, color-correct scale model of the car. Pictured here, Los Angeles Angels pitcher CJ Wilson’s model, in Cerberus Pearl no less. On Dec. 15, McLaren announced that scale models would now be available to mere proles like us. Sizes range from 1:64 to 1:8, with pricing from a few bucks to about $12,000.
