Let's widen the door for entry to a career in law
Claire Welsh Claire Welsh says young people from all walks of life need encouragement The Street Law programme, run by the Law Society of Scotland, is designed to introduce young people to legal concepts, to improve skills like critical thinking, and more importantly to get them thinking that a career in law might be open to them.
Can we empirically derive a geographic definition of ‘coastal’ for use in cancer data reporting? An ecological modelling study using England’s national cancer registry
Despite the health of coastal communities in the UK having come under scrutiny and been found lacking in recent years, research into precisely who is disadvantaged, in what ways and through which causal mechanisms has been lacking. The main cause of this deficit in our knowledge, and thus the ability to affect positive change, has hitherto been hampered by the lack of an accepted definition of ‘coastal’ for the purposes of cancer research.
The experiences of children, adolescents and their parents in isolation in a Danish paediatric unit: A qualitative study
Abstract Previous studies on adult patients in hospital isolation show that it can be highly stressful, with some patients affected by depression and anxiety. This study aimed to explore how children, adolescents, and their parents perceive isolation and how it affects them physically, psychologically, and socially. A qualitative approach was used comprising semi-structured interviews, participant observations, and field notes.
Static Socio-Ecological COVID-19 Vulnerability Index and Vaccine Hesitancy Index for England
Summary Background Population characteristics can be used to infer vulnerability of communities to COVID-19, or to the likelihood of high levels of vaccine hesitancy. Communities harder hit by the virus, or at risk of being so, stand to benefit from greater resource allocation than their population size alone would suggest.

Figure 1 Cardiovascular disease risk matrix for the combined effect of grip strength and walking pace by sex and age. Risk matrixes were developed using Cox regression models for the overall data, by sex and by age and sex groups (40 to 50, 51 to 60, >60 years for both women and men).

Glycated Hemoglobin, Prediabetes, and the Links to Cardiovascular Disease: Data From UK Biobank
Cardiovascular and Metabolic Risk Abstract OBJECTIVE HbA1c levels are increasingly measured in screening for diabetes; we investigated whether HbA1c may simultaneously improve cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk assessment, using QRISK3, American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA), and Systematic COronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE) scoring systems. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS UK Biobank participants without baseline CVD or known diabetes (n = 357,833) were included.
Misleading mouse studies waste medical resources
The failure of experimental drugs that had once looked promising could have been prevented with better animal studies, according to a re-examination of past clinical trials. “I hear too many stories about patients who have used their one shot at getting into a trial on a drug that didn’t have enough legs to begin with, and that’s a tragedy,” says Steve Perrin, an amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) researcher who led the work.
