Robotic micro-actuators power smart healing implants
Smart implants that not only stabilise a fracture but also monitor the healing process from day one — and deliver targeted support when required — are currently being developed at Saarland University by a team of engineers, medical researchers and computer scientists.

News - Research in Germany

Many of these artefacts were discovered in caves in the Swabian Jura, such as a small mammoth found in the Vogelherd Cave in Lone Valley in south-western Germany.
Drug-coated balloons shown as effective alternative to stents in larger arteries
In the treatment of larger narrowed blood vessels, drug-coated balloon catheters have been shown to deliver lasting and effective outcomes. Their minimally invasive nature makes them a viable alternative to stents. These findings, from a research team led by cardiologist Professor Bruno Scheller at Saarland University, have now been validated by an international study involving over 3,300 patients. Monitoring bone healing without X-ray radiation: A new approach lights the way
A medical research team at Saarland University, led by Professor Bergita Ganse, has discovered a new approach to monitoring bone fracture healing by measuring blood supply to the tissue at the fracture site and the level of oxygen in the blood. Bone regeneration can be monitored quickly and easily using near-infrared light rather than harmful shorter wavelength radiation. Up to now, doctors have had to rely on X-ray images and CT scans to provide occasional snapshots of the fracture site.
Big data in forensic medicine - development of a first forensic pathology database
ABSTRACT This article highlights the difficulties that researchers face when analysing forensic medical data and how the development of a forensic pathology database can help overcome these challenges. The authors created a first prototype of a forensic pathology database. The database includes various data points, such as sex, age, height, weight, examination and autopsy details, for each case. Additionally, data from whole-body post-mortem computed tomography were reviewed.

Alzheimer's research: New study uncovers previously unknown processes in fat metabolism
New insights into the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease could unlock novel therapeutic approaches and help to prevent the disease. A study led by Professors Marcus Grimm and Tobias Hartmann at the Rhineland Campus of the SRH University of Applied Health Sciences in Leverkusen and at Saarland University has shed light on a bidirectional interaction in the body's fat metabolism that could play an important role in the development of the disease.
Valves and locking devices can open halfway and close softly even without sensors Original
New technology is making it possible to control valves and locking devices without the need for any additional sensors. A metal piston, a tiny chip and small pulses of current—that's all that the drive systems specialists led by Professor Matthias Nienhaus of Saarland University need for their sustainable and cost-effective technology.
Want HNW Clients? Go Beyond Garden-Variety Charitable Planning
Photo by unsplash/@rodionkutsaev If your goal is to work with high-net-worth clients, you can differentiate your financial advisory firm by going beyond traditional charitable planning and offering strategic philanthropic advice.
