Research Article NEUROSCIENCE INTRODUCTION Working memory (WM) holds information temporarily and supports decision-making, learning, and planning. As a severely capacity-limited system, the precision of WM declines steeply as the number of items being stored increases (1–6). In addition, inherently noisy neural activity supports WM and the quality of WM representations as indexed by behavioral reports fluctuates across trials (7–14). Thus, uncertainty influences our memory-guided decisions.
