Jeff Butts’s Biography

Jeff Butts was a nerd long before they got their revenge. He’s been voiding warranties since the early 1980s, when he took apart his uncle’s 286 to try coaxing a bit more power out of the Hercules graphics controller. Either by luck or skill (or both), nobody ever knows he’s voided their warranty because Jeff knows and lives by the most important rule: don’t get caught. These days, when Jeff’s not voiding warranties, he’s writing about voiding warranties.

Jeff has worked in a wide variety of IT positions in his life. From 1st-tier tech support to on-site maintenance of airfield lighting control systems, Jeff has spent his life expanding his experience and knowledge about all things tech. He has worked with every major operating system, spends time tinkering with electronics and DIY projects, and is quick to adopt the latest technology. Whether it's trying to automate some task on his Mac or build a cool smart home project with Raspberry Pi, Jeff still works to increase his knowledge in the geek world.

He holds a Master of Arts in Professional Writing & Editing as well as a Master's in Computing and Information Systems. At one point pre-Y2K, he got his Comptia A+ certification. Even before that, he became an IBM-certified OS/2 Engineer.

Jeff has done contracting for IBM, the Workers Compensation Board of Alberta, Nav Canada, and others. He's a writer, editor, database administrator, webmaster, and guru of just about any popular non-Microsoft tech people might need help with.

These days, Jeff focuses mainly on writing up his tech exploits, along with news and reviews. He regularly contributes at The Mac Observer, along with How-To Geek. He makes frequent contributions to [The Daily Observations])https://www.macobserver.com/show/tmo-daily-observations/) podcast and has previously hosted his own podcast, Terminal Tinkering.
