Jeff Butts was a nerd long before they got their revenge. He’s been voiding warranties since the early 1980s, when he took apart his uncle’s 286 to try coaxing a bit more power out of the Hercules graphics controller. Either by luck or skill (or both), nobody ever knows he’s voided their warranty because Jeff knows and lives by the most important rule: don’t get caught. 3D printing filament got cheaper this year, but that's not where I actually saved money

Filament prices coming down should have felt like the big win this year. A spool that costs less is easy to understand, easy to justify, and easy to celebrate when the printer is already sitting there hungry for plastic. I’m not going to pretend I didn’t notice cheaper PLA and PETG when I was restocking. I absolutely did, because I’m still human and I still enjoy pretending a bulk filament order is a financially responsible act.

The funny thing about home lab hardware is that “too much” usually has a very short shelf life. I set up a LattePanda Sigma with 32GB of RAM and a 500GB NVMe SSD, expecting it to be excessive for most of what I do. On paper, it looked like the kind of board that should spend half its life waiting around for a workload worthy of it. In practice, it took almost no time at all before I started finding jobs for it.

I used to think my 3D printer would spend most of its life making clever little desk toys and decorative nonsense. It still does some of that, because I’m not immune to a good tiny dragon or ridiculous cable mascot. But this year, the printer became less of a novelty machine and more of a household parts department. It started replacing the annoying little things I used to buy, lose, break, or simply tolerate.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I write either from my Mac mini or my iPhone, depending on my mood. I do almost all of my writing in markdown, using Bear, then import to WP.
