Abstract What is sustained in discourses on social sustainability? Conceptualizations of social sustainability typically fail to consider exclusions, limits, and sovereignty, thereby raising questions regarding the limits of what or who is to be sustained. Communities of various types and sizes exist, as do policies at different levels, but how can we sustain communities without limitations, divisions, or exclusions? For any society, the question of its own continuation is a constitutive issue.
