Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Writing for a fitness magazine called "Wellness"

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Nope

How is social media changing news?

Twitter reports news before LIVE TV these days. That just shows mobile and content are the future. Not the TV.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Don't have one. I like biographies and somewhat true stories of successful business people I can learn from.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means that you like writing and are generally pretty good at it.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

No idea...

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Connect with me on social media and provide value before asking for anything. Show interest in what I'm doing, then go for the ask.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Too many to name.

What's your favorite social network?

Facebook

Who do you wish followed you?

Probably Mark Cuban and/or Tiger Woods. One is a pure business mogul and the other is a professional athlete turned entrepreneur.

Why did you become a journalist?

Because I found writing opened up so many opportunities for myself and my business. It's too good of an opportunity to grow.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I did not. I was an athlete that played hockey, rugby, football, and track & field.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

"Why Every Entrepreneur Should Be Blogging" because writing has brought me so many amazing opportunities.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Start writing. Your first article won't be very good but keep writing and improving each day, then one day it will just click.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Doesn't overly matter. I'm an entrepreneur so I'm always willing to chat whenever.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

They showed me tremendous value by interacting with me on social, then I felt they were good people, so I wrote about their company.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Write about my company, without even starting a conversation with me. Show value before asking for anything in life.

What's your favorite drink?

Root Beer

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

In the kitchen cooking with my wife, or planning our next travel destination.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Probably Entrepreneur and/or Inc.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That I only write about business/entrepreneurship. I also have a passion for travel, fitness, wellness, and inspiration.
