BON Roundtable: Post-NSD Recruiting Discussion
National Signing Day is officially in the books and that means Texas head football coach Steve Sarkisian has put the bow on his first full recruiting cycle in Austin. Much of the heavy lifting was done during the early signing period, but that didn’t mean there wasn’t still work to do heading to NSD2. Longtime priority offensive line target Devon Campbell stuck to his timeline to announce on NSD2.
4-star QB Maalik Murphy signs with Texas
The lone quarterback commit in Steve Sarkisian’s 2022 class — technically speaking — is now officially a member of the Texas Longhorns program, as Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra product Maalik Murphy signed with Texas on Wednesday during the early signing period. Texas QB commit @SmvOperator just informed me he signed his NLI and sent it in. — Mike Roach (@MikeRoach247) December 15, 2021 Minutes later, Texas announced Murphy as a member of the 2022 class.
Consistency and removing doubt are key to Texas WR Troy Omeire’s return to the field
Nose tackle Keondre Coburn likes to call Texas Longhorns redshirt freshman receiver Troy Omeire, “Little Julio,” as in little Julio Jones. The “little” aspect of that isn’t to be taken too literally, because, well, there’s nothing little about the 6’3, 220-pound Omeire, who’s already listed as the same size as Jones and is already noticeably larger than another elite in Arizona Cardinals receiver DeAndre Hopkins.
4-star PG Arterio Morris announces commitment to Texas
Chris Beard’s 2022 class is officially underway. After spending his first few months on the Forty Acres building a staff and rebuilding his first roster, Beard added his first 2022 pledge on Saturday afternoon in the form of elite Lewisville iSchool point guard Arterio Morris, who committed to the Texas Longhorns over Georgia, Kansas and Oregon, he told Stadium’s Jeff Goodman.
Texas offers 4-star 2023 DT Rueben Bain

Texas Orange-White spring game: Open thread
Cody Daniel 57 mins ago On Saturday afternoon, the first Orange-White spring game of the Steve Sarkisian era in Austin will get underway. © Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports Save the running backs coach Stan Drayton, the Texas Longhorns are learning under the guidance of an entirely new coaching staff, and the excitement certainly favors the offense, which will be helmed by Sarkisian himself.
Chris Beard tasked with major roster rebuild during first offseason as Texas HC
Much of the reason the 2020-21 campaign was considered to be a make or break year for the Shaka Smart era was because the roster was ideally constructed for considerable success. It featured a wealth of talent, experience and depth all the way down the bench — so much so that Smart’s 2020 class had room for just one member. © Scott Wachter-USA TODAY Sports The void was filled by Greg Brown III, a five-star forward regarded as a top-10 talent in his class.

Texas RB Preview: Horns may have elite duo in Bijan Robinson, Roschon Johnson
As new Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian works through his first spring on the Forty Acres, he and an almost entirely new staff will be tasked with identifying their top talent and filling various voids with said talent. That largely isn’t the case for one of the lone holdovers from Tom Herman’s staff, running backs coach Stan Drayton.
Casey Thompson, Hudson Card are now the faces of the Texas QB competition
“Trust me. Just trust me.” At this point, the wishes of first-year Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian should almost certainly be honored without question. As evident by his lengthy track record of developing quarterbacks into truly elite college stars and NFL prospects, Sarkisian’s reputation as a quarterback guru is well deserved.
4-star OLB Morice Blackwell signs with Texas
Arlington Martin linebacker Morice Blackwell is officially a member of the 2021 Texas Longhorns recruiting class after signing on Wednesday during Early Signing Day. Welcome to the Texas family Morice Blackwell Jr. (@Mor_iceB)! #TrUTh21 pic.twitter.com/jXrzf8C9fG — Texas Football (@TexasFootball) December 16, 2020 A consensus four-star talent with 14 offers to his name, Blackwell earned his Texas offer on Feb.
No. 1 ATH Ja’Tavion Sanders signs with Texas
The headliner of Tom Herman’s 2021 class is now officially in the fold, as five-star Denton Ryan athlete Ja’Tavion Sanders put pen to paper and signed his National Letter of Intent with the Texas Longhorns on Wednesday. 5-star athlete Ja’tavion Sanders is officially a Longhorn. Sanders ranks 13th on the ESPN 300.
Texas, Sam Ehlinger spread the wealth at receiver against UTEP
Devin Duvernay isn’t donning burnt orange and white anymore for the Texas Longhorns. Neither is Collin Johnson. Even considering Johnson’s injuries, the duo collected nearly 2,000 receiving yard’s last season; the bulk of which were credited to Duvernay, who time and time again proved to be quarterback Sam Ehlinger’s safety blanket en route to 1,386 yards — the second-best effort in school history.
Texas assistant coach Jai Lucas officially leaving for Kentucky
Once again, John Calipari has come into Texas and secured the signature of a notable name, but this time around it isn’t a five-star McDonald’s All-American. Rather, it’s Texas Longhorns assistant coach Jai Lucas, whose expected departure from the Texas Longhorns men’s basketball program is now official, as he’s headed to Lexington for an off-court role. The news of Lucas’ likely departure surfaced nearly two weeks ago.
Former Texas CB Donovan Duvernay reportedly transfers to Northwestern State
Several months after entering the NCAA Transfer Portal in early January, former Texas Longhorns cornerback Devin Duvernay has found another home, as he has reportedly transferred to Northwestern State, per 247Sports’ Chris Hummer. A member of Charlie Strong’s final class in Austin, Duvernay originally signed with Baylor on National Signing Day in 2016.

Only two days after parting ways with longtime women’s basketball coach Karen Aston, Athletic Director Chris Del Conte has found her successor, as former Mississippi State coach has been hired as the next Texas Longhorns women’s basketball coach, the school announced on Sunday. Welcome to the Forty, @CoachVic_UT! Let's give Coach & his family a warm Texas welcome.
Texas salvages season with imposing 38-10 Alamo Bowl win over No. 11 Utah
SAN ANTONIO, Texas — No, this wasn’t the Sugar Bowl. No, Texas isn’t back. But following a 7-5 regular season finish — nothing short of a disappointment following Texas’ 10-win display in 2019 — this one matters. In a sense, the Texas Longhorns salvaged their entire season, even if only perhaps the perception surrounding it, with an imposing 38-10 Alamo Bowl win over the No. 11 Utah Utes to cap the season and the year. Texas didn’t simply end the season on a high note, either.
No. 2-ranked 2021 ILB Kendrick Blackshire includes Texas in top 13
More than half of the schools that have extended offers to highly-touted 2021 Duncanville inside linebacker Kendrick Blackshire now find themselves on the outside looking in. On Tuesday, the four-star talent made his initial list cut, trimming his list of 27 options to a top 13.
The Eyes in the Sky: Donovan Jackson, Hayden Conner, Loic Fouonji
Over my years as a player and a coach I heard and used my fair share of coachisms. Many of them I probably can’t write in this setting, but the one I will share is one that often rang true whether it was referring to the good, bad, or just plain ugly. “The eye in the sky doesn’t lie”. The eye in the sky, of course, being the cameras up in the box watching your every move during games and practices.
Charles Omenihu already proving his critics wrong
How Charles Omenihu fell to the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft remains a mystery. The former Texas Longhorns edge rusher amassed mind-boggling numbers as a senior last season, totaling 45 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, and 9.5 sacks en route to honors as a Big 12 First-Team selection, and more notably, as the Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year.
Dynamic APB Ty Jordan commits to Texas
Stan Drayton is likely now done recruiting the running back position this cycle, as the Texas Longhorns have landed a pledge from dynamic West Mesquite all-purpose back Ty Jordan, who announced his commitment to the Horns on Saturday/Sunday. Jordan’s commitment came while on campus for No. 9 Texas’ X-X win/loss over No. 6 LSU.
Texas RB Daniel Young reportedly cleared to play vs. Rice
The injury bug hasn’t been kind to the Texas Longhorns to begin the 2019 season, but Tom Herman and his staff now appear se to add another healthy body to a room in dire need of one. After missing the first two weeks of the season with a high-ankle sprain, junior running back Daniel Young has progressed well and “there is a good chance he might play” on Saturday against Rice, per a report from Orangebloods’ Anwar Richardson.
Texas DB B.J. Foster sidelined with ‘pretty significant hamstring injury’
The Texas Longhorns will be without starting nickel back B.J. Foster for the foreseeable future, as head coach Tom Herman said on Monday that he expects the sophomore to miss “at least a couple weeks with a pretty significant hamstring injury.” Herman noted that Foster’s likely replacement would be sophomore hybrid safety DeMarvion Overshown. “The good thing is that’s, by far, our deepest position on the team with Chris Brown playing as well as he is,’ Herman said.
No. 3 2021 ATH Ja’Tavion Sanders commits to Texas
An already impressive Texas Longhorns 2021 class has added a pledge from yet another elite prospect, as Denton Ryan athlete Ja’Tavion Sanders announced his commitment to Tom Herman’s program on Saturday as the Horns took on the LSU Tigers. More...
Loaded visitor list on tap for Texas-LSU game
We’re set for arguably the biggest showdown on the Forty Acres in recent memory with the No. 9 Texas Longhorns set to host the No. 6 LSU Tigers on Saturday evening, so unsurprisingly, Tom Herman and his staff will be hosting a multitude of recruits representing the 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 classes. In fact, as of Wednesday, the Longhorns visitor list was full.
Texas’ offensive line will face tall test in the trenches vs. LSU
After opening the season against an undersized and overmatched Louisiana Tech defensive line, the Texas Longhorns’ offensive line is about to come face to face with a far more formidable front unit with the No. 6 LSU Tigers coming to Austin on Saturday evening. On Monday, Texas head coach Tom Herman praised the size and strength LSU features in the trenches, and make no mistake about it: The Tigers boasts quite a bit.
Takeaways from No. 10 Texas’ 45-14 win over Louisiana Tech
Photo by John Rivera/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images The No. 10 Texas Longhorns’ season for underway on a high note with a 45-14 win over Louisiana Tech. Here are a few initial takeaways from Texas’ showing: Texas did what a good team is supposed to do against an overmatched opponent. First things first, Texas won its season-opener for the first time since Tom Herman took over, which, in and of itself, is notable.
Texas a top team for 5-star CG Bryce Thompson
Shaka Smart and his staff remain in pursuit of their first 2020 pledge, but they’re now one step closer to potentially filling that void with one of the nation’s truly elite talents, as five-star Tulsa (Okla.) Booker T. Washington combo guard Bryce Thompson named the Texas Longhorns in his top seven on Thursday evening, along with Arkansas, Kansas, Michigan State, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma. So grateful for this opportunity.
Texas’ secondary may become a strength as embarrassment of riches adds experience
In the aftermath of a mass exodus that included eight starters, the Texas Longhorns defense has its fair share of questions to answer as the 2019 campaign inches nearer. The Horns’ secondary is certainly no exception. Gone are 146 career appearances and 90 starts worth of experience in the form of cornerbacks Kris Boyd and Davante Davis, and nickelback P.J. Locke III, so there’s understandably some concern regarding how Texas replaces three proven products with much fresher faces.
4-star CB Joshua Eaton commits to Texas over Texas A&M
Tom Herman and his staff have once again reaped the rewards of a recruitment that essentially changed course down the stretch, with Houston Aldine MacArthur cornerback Joshua Eaton becoming the latest example after siding with the Texas Longhorns over the Texas A&M Aggies on Friday. Through it all.....
Texas cracks top 10 in preseason AP Top 25
For the third time in as many years under head coach Tom Herman, the Texas Longhorns will enter the season ranked. On Monday, the AP Preseason Top 25 poll was released and Texas is set to enter the 2019 campaign as one of the nation’s top 10 teams, coming in at No. 10 nationally. After entering the 2017 and 2018 seasons ranked No. 23 nationally, Texas’ placement at No. 10 marks the Horns’ highest preseason placement under Herman.
Despite limited carries, Texas RB Daniel Young opted to work over transferring
Three running backs have left the Texas Longhorns football program since mid-December. Toneil Carter opted out of the program weeks before Texas’ Sugar Bowl showdown with Georgia. A little more than a month later, Kyle Porter and Tristian Houston each entered their names into the transfer portal, as well, all seemingly in search of an increased role. Daniel Young, however, did not leave.
4-star S Xavion Alford commits to Texas over Texas A&M

Only this time around, the win on the recruiting trail came at the expense of the Aggies, as Pearland Shadow Creek product Xavion Alford has announced his commitment to Texas over Texas A&M. #100YARDLANDLORD pic.twitter.com/tnJC3XoKJh — XAVION ALFORD (@100YARDLANDLORD) August 16, 2019 Alford’s recruitment was yet another one that changed courses down the stretch.
Longhorns land pledge from 4-star SDE Princely Umanmielen
The Texas Longhorns won’t have to wait until mid-October to learn the decision of coveted edge rusher Princely Umanmielen. On Monday, the local Manor star brought his recruitment to an unexpected close, announcing his commitment to Tom Herman’s program over options including Oklahoma, Texas A&M, LSU, and Oregon. #HookEm pic.twitter.com/9wj4ogj94P — Thehitman (@d1princely) August 12, 2019 Umanmielen originally aimed to extend his recruitment a bit longer with a planned commitment date of Oct. 15.
4-star S Jerrin Thompson commits to Longhorns
After previously striking out with key prospects at the position, the Texas Longhorns have picked up a major pledge from one of the state’s top safeties, as Lufkin standout Jerrin Thompson announced his commitment to Tom Herman’s program on Sunday. Only time will tell https://t.co/wXZKAQjdX1 — Jerrin Thompson (@bugg_24) August 11, 2019 A four-star talent, Thompson has held a Texas offer for only a few weeks, as the Longhorns jumped into the mix on July 23.
Texas DE Ta’Quon Graham mentally, physically primed for major role in 2019
The Ta’Quon Graham era may finally be upon us. Once regarded as the most highly-ranked defensive addition to Tom Herman’s transitional class in 2017, Graham has largely spent the previous two seasons in a reserve role, learning from the likes of NFL-caliber talents in Poona Ford, Chris Nelson, and Charles Omenihu. “With Poona, from his demeanor,” Graham told the media on Sunday of what he learned from previous leaders along the defensive line.

Addition of Bijan Robinson re-writes narrative surrounding Texas RB recruiting
The current Texas Longhorns staff, and more specifically, running backs coach Stan Drayton, have received a considerable share of criticism in recent years in regards to running back recruiting. Fair or not, the staff essentially inherited some the Texas fan base’s frustrations from the Charlie Strong era striking out on in-state star J.K. Dobbins.
No. 3 RB Bijan Robinson announces commitment to Texas
Tom Herman’s 2020 class now features a new headliner. To cap what can be described as nothing short of a seismic shift in his recruitment throughout the previous several days, Tucson (Az.) Salpointe Catholic running back Bijan Robinson brought his recruitment to a close on Friday and announced his commitment to the Texas Longhorns on Instagram. View this post on Instagram This moment is one I’ve dreamt of my entire life.

For the first time since the addition of Johnathan Gray in 2012, the Texas Longhorns have picked up a pledge from a five-star running back prospect in the form of Tucson (Az.) Salpointe Catholic product Bijan Robinson.
Recapping Texas’ July surge on the recruiting trail
The Texas Longhorns entered July in search of some summer success on the recruiting trail. It’s safe to say Tom Herman’s staff enjoyed just that. Texas’ 2020 class quickly ballooned to double figures, while what was previously a one-man 2021 haul became an actual class of home-grown talent for Texas to build around. How did the Horns go from casually strolling through the summer to surging?
4-star CG DJ Steward names Texas in Final 8
Shaka Smart and his staff remain in pursuit of their first pledge of the 2020 cycle, and they’re now one small step closer to that goal, as Chicago (Ill.) Whitney Young combo guard DJ Steward named the Texas Longhorns in his final eight on Thursday. DePaul, Duke, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa State, Louisville, and North Carolina were named as finalists, as well. I would like to take this time to thank all of the schools that offered me a scholarship.
The Texas defense is young, but it won’t be without talent entering 2019
With two showings to consider — both of which provided notable progress — It appears as if Tom Herman’s plan to rebuild the Texas Longhorns into a championship-caliber program is well on its way. But as the 2019 campaign inches nearer, a more immediate question looms and will largely determine whether or not Texas can take the next step in its rebuild.
Key Texas OT target Chad Lindberg announces commitment to Georgia
The Texas Longhorns’ top remaining offensive line target is taking his talents elsewhere. Thank you to all.

No. 4 S Lathan Ransom commits to Ohio State over Texas, Notre Dame
Yet another one of the Texas Longhorns’ top safety targets is now off the board. Fewer than two weeks after Houston C.E.
