David J, left, on stage at The Casbah on June 9, 2026. (Photo by Anthony Trevino) While so many artists his age are recreating their cherished golden oldies to make fans feel young again, David J offers pure musical medicine in intimate shows. The 69-year old bassist from Bauhaus and Love And Rockets skips the obligatory hits, but his freewheeling acoustic set is a clinic on aging gracefully and staying human by making art in an absurd, inhumane world.
Queen of the Rodeo
CW: violence, death or dying, blood, bodily fluids, bodily harm. We hear you laughing as you speed by on the interstate. In spite of what you might think of us, we are a proud town. We don’t need your understanding. We don’t explain. You couldn’t handle the answers. Our roadside spite-shrines. The apocalyptic dioramas of our Creationist Museum. The glossolalia and gunfire at our drive-in revivals. The coyote skin pelts and skull-trees outside our double-wide doors.
On Writing an Urbex Thriller and Exploring the Vertical City
How far would you go to be the first? The only? All the great cities have become theme parks, and all the theme parks feed lots, Burning Man a millionaires’ mud-wallow, Everest an overbooked junkyard, even the once-infamous Area 51 is a tourist trap. But the most thrilling excursion you’ve never taken could be right outside your door some hundred stories straight up—or down.

The Sister City - Lightspeed Magazine
When Loren left, he said it wasn’t me but the city. “This place hates me, Julian,” he said of LA. “I have to live in a city that loves me like this shithole loves that douchebag from the Red Hot Chili Peppers.” Typically, he buried the casual cruelty under a bad joke, but it was the first crack in a reservoir of obsession he’d kept completely secret. When he abruptly left for Portland, he didn’t ask me to come with him, and I wouldn’t shame myself by following him.
