“Still Cool as a Zombie”: Community, the Zombie Aesthetic, and the Politics of Belonging

1. Introduction On 17 September 2009, the pilot episode of NBC’s Community (2009–2015) aired. Over its six seasons (five on NBC and one on the now-defunct Yahoo! Screen), Community gained a cult following, thanks in no small part to its sharp writing, strong performances, and intertextual playfulness. Season 1 episodes such as “Contemporary American Poultry” and “Modern Warfare” cement the show’s reputation for demanding but satisfying intertextual play.
