Coastal ferry tolls prompt two Republicans to vote against NC budget

The new state budget bill that's up for votes in the legislature Wednesday would add tolls to four coastal ferry services. Passengers already pay tolls for two of the ferries to Ocracoke Island and the ferry between Southport and Fort Fisher. The final budget bill includes a Senate proposal to charge tolls on all ferries starting in January.

NC House votes to end sales tax on diapers, feminine hygiene products

The state House voted unanimously Tuesday to remove sales taxes from diapers and feminine products. The tax exemption would apply to diapers for babies and adults, as well as baby wipes. Feminine hygiene products like tampons and pads would also become tax exempt. Sherry Presnall with the nonprofit group Diaper Train spoke in favor of the bill during a hearing before the House Finance Committee.

Long-delayed NC budget released with raises, Helene funding, ferry tolls and more

State lawmakers released a $34 billion budget bill Tuesday morning that comes a full year behind schedule. The House and Senate plan to vote on the spending plan later this week, aiming to get the bill to Gov. Josh Stein's desk by late Thursday. The 600-page bill includes income tax cuts and state employee raises that lawmakers announced in May. Most state workers will receive a 3% raise along with a bonus of either $1,000 or $1,750, depending on their salary level.
