I knew I’d speak with Thomas Eriksen again. We first spoke in 2023 after he released his sixth album as Mork, Dypet. In conversation, he was warm, open, and self-aware, the inverse of the insularity Mork projected. At that time, he was in the midst of a turning point for his life project--black metal that, on one hand, seemingly had never listened to a record past 1993, while on the other was innately tied to Eriksen’s personal growth.

Cleveland-based death-doom outfit Procession take that mantra to heart on their debut EP, The Witch King, which we’re premiering today before it releases on Friday. The Witch King hinges on the implication posed by the oppressive forces guitarist and vocalist Dominic Dulin cites as the EP’s impetus. Procession communicates Dulin’s anxiety and helplessness, which is to say that above all else, The Witch King is threatening.

Though a cathedral is seemingly the most scenic of metal venues, with its pointed arches, stained glass windows, pews, and ribbed vaulting, it doesn’t quite gel with the beer-battered persona of North American metal. Terrains of stone and sediment are more representative of the American metal spirit, and Grundy County, Tennessee holds one of the best venues in that regard.
