Bioinspired Heart Valve Prosthesis Made by Silicone Additive Manufacturing
Highlights • Multi-material additive manufacturing of patient-specific shaped heart valves • Fiber-reinforced valves with low mechanical stresses and excellent hemodynamics • Elastomeric printing enables mechanical matching with the host biological tissue Progress and Potential Current heart valve solutions are expensive and labor intensive to manufacture, have relatively short life spans, contain animal-derived tissue or metallic elements that require immunosuppression or antithrombogenic...

3D printing of bacteria into functional complex materials
Despite recent advances to control the spatial composition and dynamic functionalities of bacteria embedded in materials, bacterial localization into complex three-dimensional (3D) geometries remains a major challenge. We demonstrate a 3D printing approach to create bacteria-derived functional materials by combining the natural diverse metabolism of bacteria with the shape design freedom of additive manufacturing.
Geologically-inspired strong bulk ceramics made with water at room temperature
The basic physico-chemical mechanisms underlying the geological densification process of carbonate rocks in nature, known as cold sintering, may involve the different mass transport pathways schematically depicted in Fig. 1a (refs 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21).
Bio-inspired self-shaping ceramics
To demonstrate our ability to create self-shaping ceramics, we design proof-of-concept bilayer architectures whose microstructure is programmed to promote pure bending or pure twisting during sintering (Fig. 1). The microstructure required to induce differential shrinkage and lead to a predictable shape of the final sintered ceramic is introduced in the green body through biaxial alignment of alumina micrometre-sized platelets in the initially fluid cast suspension.
Open circuit voltage and efficiency in ternary organic photovoltaic blends
Organic bulk heterojunction solar cells based on ternary blends of two donor absorbers and one acceptor are investigated by experiments and modeling. The commonly observed continuous tunability of the open circuit voltage V with the donor1 : donor2 ratio can quantitatively be explained as quasi-Fermi level splitting due to photocreated charges filling a joint density of states that is broadened by Gaussian disorder.
Additive manufacturing of biologically-inspired materials
Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies offer an attractive pathway towards the fabrication of functional materials featuring complex heterogeneous architectures inspired by biological systems. In this paper, recent research on the use of AM approaches to program the local chemical composition, structure and properties of biologically-inspired materials is reviewed.
