Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

As an entertainment reporter for The Ball State Daily News, I gained valuable experience covering the local arts and entertainment scene. I interviewed musicians, actors, and other performers, and wrote feature stories about upcoming events and shows. Through this experience, I honed my skills in conducting research, conducting interviews, and writing engaging and informative articles. It also allowed me to gain insight into the entertainment industry and understand the workings of the industry. Overall, it was a rewarding experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in it.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

As technology has evolved, the use of typewriters has become less common. Many people today have never been able to use a typewriter, and I am no exception. I have never had the experience of using a typewriter, as they are not used in my generation. Instead, I have grown up using computers and other digital devices for writing and communication. From typing on a keyboard to using word processing software, I am accustomed to the ease and convenience of modern technology. Despite this, I know typewriters' historical significance and impact on how people communicate and produce documents. Some people still prefer the tactile experience of typing on a mechanical typewriter. For them, it's an art form that gives them a sense of nostalgia. In any case, the fact that I have never used a typewriter does not have any negative impact on my ability to write or communicate. Technological advancements give me access to tools that make writing and communication more efficient and convenient.

How is social media changing news?

Social media has had a significant impact on the way news is consumed and distributed. In the past, we disseminated the news through traditional channels such as newspapers, television, and radio. However, with the rise of social media, individuals and organizations can now share and access news through platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. One of the major ways that social media is changing the news is by increasing the speed at which information is disseminated. Traditional news outlets often have a set schedule for releasing new information, but with social media, we can share news anywhere. This can lead to a faster spread of information, but also the spread of misinformation. Social media algorithms are tailored to deliver content based on users' interests and behavior, leading to filter bubbles, where people see news and information confirming their existing beliefs and attitudes, rather than being exposed to diverse perspectives. Social media has impacted how news is produced, distributed, and consumed. Still, it has drawbacks, such as spreading misinformation, lacking oversight, and creating filter bubbles.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

One common misperception about entertainment journalism is that it is a superficial and trivial field, centered on celebrity gossip and scandals. This is not the case. Entertainment journalism is a broad field that covers a wide range of topics, including music, film, theater, television, and more. It is a field that requires a deep understanding of the industry and a strong ability to research and analyze the content being produced. Entertainment journalists often write about the creative process, behind the scenes of production, the cultural impact and significance of entertainment products, and the business aspects of the entertainment industry. They also need to have a well-rounded knowledge of the industry and its players to make meaningful critiques of the work being produced. In short, it is a field that requires both skill and knowledge, and should be respected as a serious and influential profession in the media industry.
